neu finned with 3905

Has anyone actually used a finned version neu 1515 with the 3905 emaxx? I got my 1515 in and there is very little movement available for adjustment. I haven't gotten the pinion gears yet, so I was going to see what everyone else, if there are any have used. Also, I am using the 2 motor mount, I haven't bought the single, but I will if it has more adjustability. Hopefully someone can input what they have used.
Thanks.

Cant help you with gearing options, but I can tell you that there is no extra adjustment roomwith the sinlge motor mount- its just the same as the original 2 motor-mount, only without the place for the second motor. Incidently, the off-set motor posistion does have more room to allow extra gearing options...

You can get out the Dremel tool and grind a few fins where the fins hit the Tranny case,I have heard alot of guys say they do that. Also you can use Jato spur gears and witch are smaller than the E-MAXX spurs and allow for more gearing options,do not use T-MAXX spurs they are the wrong pitch olny use the Jato spurs they are the same pitch as the E-MAXX.

Ass soon as neu sends my 1515 1.5d/f back I can see what will happen. I had success with a hacker c50 motor, which is slightly larger than a neu finned can. I used 18/48 mod 1 gearing.

This is a 1515/1y no fins, jato-58/22-rc-monster, Thats probobly the smallest spur and pinion combo you could fit with finned as I have a tad more room for smooth can, as wade said you can grind down the 2 fins that hit. Id go with bigger pinions 24-26 and adjust spurs around that.

jayjay283: your two links point to the same thing

After reading up a bit, I went ahead and ordered a 24T hardened rc monster pinion for my Emaxx, and also will be picking up a variety of Emaxx specific spurs 62 and 65 (stock is 68) to use with my 1512 2.5D 14.8V setup.

I hope to have my pinion in this saturday from RC Monster.

Just need to convert everything back to 2 speed now.

Ok, here is quick report on fitment.

With the Neu 1512 2.5D finned motor and a 24T pinion, I was able to fit this to the 65T spur just barely (no grinding on the can) and the 68T fit fine, though, if running a 26T I don't think you could get enough space between the spur and the pinion.

62T was just a hair too far away. With alittle chassis grinding or taking off of the fins you probably could get it to mate up.

I got mine mated up with the stock emaxx spur (68t) and a 22t pinion. I have 20 and 18 in pinions as well but haven't tried them yet. I'm running the 1.5d finned version.

Prozac: How have your temps been on the motor? I got my motor up to about 180ish but I had no ventilation holes cut, and the ESC and batteries were cool. This was with a 65T / 24T ratio.

Prozac 06.01.2008 12:43 PM

Yikes, I measured 130 and 140 after I turned it off. 68t with 22t pinion, Only on 3s though. I am yet to get some good batteries. They may be the difference. I am going to try to strap my garmin gps to the truck and get a speed reading on it today. Temperature in dallas was in the 90s. Had a problem with my bullet connectors but I got that fixed, so I will report some more info later today.

Stuck the garmin streetpilot on the truck, no shell, same gearing as above, and on a crappy 3s Lipo I got 33.8. Then the truck flipped, gps went flying. Still works luckily.

A little fin grinding is an easy fix. I just put a 1512 1Y on my 3905. Took the fins off about 1/2" wide by 1" long where they hit the trany case. 18/68 is no problem, 15/68 will probably still mesh to. I need the track to dry out so I can see how it does with 20/68 on 4S and then go from there. The 7xl ran hot (pushing 180 in 5 minutes with 80dF air temps) geared 20/68. It had plenty of bottom end grunt and more top end than I could use on the track set up like that. The 7xl was rated 2380kv, the 1512 1Y is at 2750kv so I'm curious is to how diff it will drive. The Neu is 5 ounces lighter than the 7xl with RC-Monster clamp, so that should help things a bit.

Yeah, I don't want to remove the finns. I may just pick up the Medusa motor for use or a smooth canned neu.

Wakesurfer 06.07.2008 10:53 AM

With a big spur and pinion you may not have to take anything off fins. If you do have to grind a little it's not a big deal. Just tape up the holes in the ends of the can so you don't get any fillings inside. It's an aluminum can and fins, so it's not like the mags on the rotor are going to try to suck the shavings in. Mount the motor up with it clocked the way you want it, use an old screwdriver or scratch awl to mark the area where the fins hit the screw boss on the tranny. Little electric tape to cover the end bells on the can and then take the fins in that area down flush with the can. You might have to add a heatsink if you go with the smooth can. I just put a Novak HV 6.5 on another 3905. Not only did the fins have to come off the heatsink, but i had to cut a pretty big chunk of the heatsink shell off to to make it fit geared 12/68. The finned Neu was staying cool (120s for 5 minutes) until the MMM died, with no fan on the motor, just a hole in the windshield. It was close to meshing 20/68 with the fins, but I had to take a little off to get what I wanted.

Cain 06.12.2008 06:00 PM

Concern isn't so much to do finn grinding, its that I may sell the Neu and get a bit better resale value if the finns are all intact.

No worries though I got a Medusa 60mm 2000Kv coming. This should give me the gearing range I want. I also ordered there heatsink. they have a spot on it that doesnt' have any finns from what I understand.

My temp issue I think was partially caused by no airflow to the motor either. I am running the gear cover too, so I wouldn't be suprised that cuts down on airflow as well.

Electronics were butt cold for sure. like 80 for the batts and 85 for the ESC.
