Brushless setup for custom E-sav...
 

Hello there, this is my first post here, so I'd like to say hi in general and introduce myself. I've got a few brushless vehicles, namely a Kershaw Maxx/Revo hybrid and a mean MLST2, but nothing really up there with the big leagues.

I'm looking to finish off my first decent big bl build, a Hotbodies E-zilla (more recently recognisable as an HPI E-savage) which I will admit is not the obvious first choice for a powerful brushless build. However, with a few changes it can be made far more suitable.

This one is longer, wider, with a radically different suspension setup (well, compared to stock), much stronger in the drivetrain department, and when fitted with the brushless will be setup with the motor mounted centrally and lower between the tvps with a center gear drive from Kershaw.

I'm already running on 4S with the stock setup, and am very impressed with the power they provide. Obviously top end is stunted with the brushed motors but it wheelies like a champ even with the extended wheelbase. Lipos are Venom 5000mah, supposedly good for 100 amp continuous draw and haven't given me any reason to suppose otherwise, stay stone cold and I haven't actually managed to flatten them down yet. Mostly because I don't use a LVC at the moment and won't risk it, but also because it runs for so damn long.

Other stuff, 19 inches long overall, 18.5 inches wide, just (just) over 4 kilos locked and loaded with lipos. Running A DX3-R system in it.

Anyway, that's the truck, I need help with selecting a decent setup for it. I have some ideas concerning an MM and a Medusa motor but was wondering if it is worth getting the MMM as I plan on getting an E-revo later and running Neu power with big voltage in it. Will the 2200kv Medusa V2 be enough on 4s lipo? And is the Mamba max a suitable controller for it, or should I hang on till the teething troubles are over with the Monster Max and pick one of those up? Or have I missed something somewhere and there is a better motor/esc combo for this application?

I can't really help you on the BL front but that is one nice E-Savage:yes:

It all depends on what you are willing to spend, if you wanna spend a lot you could get a top of the line brushless motor like a neu and the monster max esc. I will be running something like that in my custom e-savy if the outrunner plan does not work out.

The medusa 2200kv 60mm motor should work fine for you. You could use a MM, but you will need an external bec, and possibly a fan. So the MMM would be the best bet as it has all of those built in. Pity it is having some teething issues, but it is the best bet.

Thanks for the comments on the E-sav. It's 2 years old now but has only recently come to life with the growing aftermarket.

It looks like I should wait for the MMM to sort itself out, knowing Castle it shouldn't take too long. I'd love to stretch to a Neu, but I just don't think I can at the moment, the Medusa is probably the best bet.

I have the 1500kv 60mm medusa in my hyper8 buggy and have been very happy with it. I run it on 6s, and the buggy is light. The motor does not even get warm, so I know it could take more load. The neu motors are nice, but you do pay for them. I am waiting for the CC neu based motors, they should go for 150-170, so quite a deal!

I was running a MM/8L on 4s lipo on my E-sav and it held up well with the exception of the rear diff that had an output shaft snap off and I had about 3 or 4 axles snap on me. No transmission failures though. The GCM extended TVPs made the biggest difference.

Overall a good truck for light bashing, but no where near as durable as my brushless Savage X SS conversion.

Ive seen that truck on the E-Savy forums and those are generis's new black extended arms and cvd's. Doesn't look half bad even though I partial to the stock silver look. This may sound really dumb but may I ask how you managed to get green deans?

venom makes them. not cheap either! (also they are venom lipos, which is why they add their own connector onto it!)
