MGM 120 -- Feigao 8s Melted Spur gears
Well after playing around with some Mamba based small Brushless in my Evader BX, I looked around and found this place.
BX all possible Alum. Slammed for street runnng ~1/2" ground clearance Last week I order the MGM 120, Feigao 8S, and motor clamp. All arrived this afternoon and after a couple of hours installed for first runs. Started on 6 cell GP3200 21/81 pinion/spur Ran about like I expected Could hold my hand on the motor as long as I wanted and the controller was barely warm. Spreadsheet says about 32mph Changed over to 3S Lipo (3200 FMA/Kokam) and quite a change. Same gears Insane speed Stopped after about 4 Min to check temperatures Hot, but could hold motor for 5-7 sec. Controller still barely warm Battery cool Spreadsheet says 49.9 mph 1 more minute run spur gear goes rolling down the street!!! Anyone know of a more heat resistant spur gear, 48p 78 or 81 tooth? Slipped was set pretty tight, would not slip till it got up about 45 deg while holding both rear tires between my knees. |
My slipper never slips except on landings after a jump. I found that slipping the slipper only leads to melted plastic and loose diffs only yields more melted plastic so my slipper is pretty tight and my diff is tighter yet. Not locked though.

Welcome Z06jim,
Since the pads are keyed to the spur and not the plates you could try almost any spur and pads you like that have the pads keyed to the spur. I personally would not consider running without slip,i'd just find one that works. What diameter is the top shaft?,perhaps there is a better spur and pads that is a direct fit. If you have access to, or know someone with a lathe, you could make any spur fit perfectly by either boring it out till it fits your bushing or making a teflon bushing to fit.(takes about 2 mins)This would get it spinning perfectly true. Are you sure the gear mesh wasn't too tight?Maybe the stock slipper and spur is good. Oh yeah, and also the diameter of the slipper plates? |
5mm shaft
1 1/2" slipper 2 paper thickness on gear lash Newly built diff and trans I have spares, just wondered if there were some better setups for 1/10th buggies. slipper pads are thin though, i wonder if there are thicker ones, 1.400 OD -- 1.125 ID .035 thick.. Going to build an all aluminum G-Maxx next and a 1/18 after that. |
Unless there's a kevlar spur for it, the only thing i can think of is to try a losi or associated spur and pads.
The pads and spur on my MF2 have never given me any trouble, and should fit your topshaft.I've not run them with as much power as yours yet (waiting for a lehner right now)but it's run many many hours with a ss5800 in the most high grip scenario you're likely to come across(dirt paws on grass,MF2 grip rolls!)with alot of slip and the kevlar spur is still in very good condition. The spur has a 4.8mm hole but if you just run a 5mm drill through it should run pretty true on your top shaft. The pads are about 1.3 inch diameter(OD 33mm,ID 24mm,1mm thick) so would be getting full coverage from your plates,so in theory it should work perfectly on your top shaft with your slipper plates. The parts are: pad(LOSA3123) they come single not pairs 86T kevlar 48p spur(LOSA3987) bigger than you want i know but maybe there's a smaller one that would work or you could use bigger pinions. Edit:LOSA3981 78T 48p kevlar spur (uses same A3123 pads) Obviously i can't know for sure if they will work without having an evader in front of me but for the cost of these parts i would give it a try.(i can't see why it wouldn't work at this point) Anyway,i suggest trying that and if it doesn't work don't blame me :L: Hope this helps,if not,oh well at least i tried.:C: What mini you gonna do.A home for your Mamba? The X ray M18T is out now and might be worth a look when there's more parts available. |
Thanks, I'm looking at the parts to put a Traxxas slipper system in place also. I think I can get the shaft turned down to fit the top gear for this transmission and I'll look for the Losi parts too.
Leaning toward Mini-t or RC18t mainly because of all the aluminum parts already out. (I'm adicted to alum). Wish Mike would put out a full parts list for a all Alum G-maxx. Oh well, I'm ordering a stock e-maxx right now so I can figure out what system I want to run in the all alum version. Maybe when I get finished I'll stick it e-bay or here Thanks again for your input Anyone know of kevlar 48p spur gears? |
Who made the spur you nuked? I've had great success with Kimbrough 48p spurs in my 1/10's, even with a Lehner 5300 in both my Pede and Associated T2 they don't wear out. I absolutely killed a lexan RRP spur in the T2 though, pulled off the gear cover to have all but two or three teeth fall out....it was weird that they sheared off like that. But yeah, the Kimbrough's have always worked good for me despite being a hardcore idiot basher.

Can't remember if it was stock or Kimbrough, different sizes, different brands.
Going to change out slipper disks, they may be worn enough to touch after just a little pad wear. Love this site. A lot of good information. 45+ in a buggy is nuts. |
I don't know how the pads work on that buggy, but if they're glazed and aren't getting any bite on the discs, scuff them just a little with some fine grain sandpaper. I s'pose you could always just rub the pad on cement too if you don't have sandpaper, either way man.
BTW, sure you got a buggy to 45, but ever seen a Pede wheely up to 40 topped with a yellow CJ8 and riding high on Masher 2000's? It's a handful, and about the most UN-speedworthy vehicle you could find. :D |
Well, put new slipper in, same gears, tightened WAY down, pulled wheelies like crazy for about 3 min.
Crunch motor spins, spur spins, wheels don't. Figured I stripped the idler,.... no, broke the web in the diff gear. New weak spot. Need a metal 48p 48 tooth diff gear now. Looked everywhere on the web. 52, 49, no 48 Anybody? Ordered rc18t team kit to play with today too. |
The associated B3/T3 (2.40:1 tranny) has a 48T diff gear i think.Hammad Ghuman make a 7075 hard anodised one for it.Good luck finding one though.I know Tower say 49T for the B3 but i think they're wrong, need to ask a B3 owner though.
I doubt you'll get your hands on one though, you need to run slip with the stock diff gear(stating the obvious). You need to run slip anyway in my opinion. |
