My Brushless 8ight Project
Finally after 4+ months I have most of gear now to start building my 1st brushless 1/8 project. Ended up deciding on the Losi 8ight as have owned 4 other Losi vehicles in the past and parts for Losi are really easy to get. The Losi 8ight I got was the Roller version which had most of the chassis built which made life abit easier and quicker  I started looking around for Brushless kits and got talked into getting the RCPD kit. That took around 2 1/2 - 3 months to arrive on my doorstep which was abit of a pain as I couldn't start working on it until those parts arrived. It took me a while to decide on what motor to go with but ended up deciding on the Neu 1512 2.5D/F 2050kv and running it off 5S which works out to be 37925rpm. I ordered a MMM which has been sitting on my computer desk for 3 weeks now still in the packet as still waiting on other parts and free time. I went to order 2 x Maxamps 5S 5000mah but the day I went to order was the day that my discount went from 15% back to 10% which I ended up changing my mind on. Deciding on a battery probably took the longest and eventually ordered 3 x Protek 5S 4000mah (4000mah is the highest they make) . It takes usually 2 weeks to get goods from US to Australia and by the time the batteries arrived a few MMM's had died and rumor was going around that it was because of the batteries. The Protek batteries are 20C Cont. and 30C burst for 3 seconds so after more deciding I ended up sending them back to Amain and purchasing 2 x Thunder Power V2 Extreme 5S 5000mah 25C/50C which only arrived yesterday. So finally the building has started today. The RCPD kit is all installed and I cut down the radio tray with a small hacksaw. Probably paint them down the track but for now just get it all together and going. Radio gear will be my old JR XS3 Radio and JR RS300 RX running a Airtronics 94358Z Steering Servo. The RS300 is a real tight fit in the RX box which will have to get changed down the track. The 5S lipo battery is fairly tall and does manage to hit the body but doesn't make the body sit up.
This was also my 2nd body I have painted. http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r...cm/001_sml.jpg Body painted and fitted http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r...cm/002_sml.jpg Some of the parts http://www.geocities.com/athowells_rckaos/rcm/004.jpg RCPD installed http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r...cm/005_sml.jpg Size difference of the Neu 1512 compared to a 540 Silvercan http://www.geocities.com/athowells_r..._motor_sml.jpg |
That looks fantastic! You got the new RC Product Designs kit with the ultimate battery tray and beefed up top plate/mount. That's the latest and definitely worth the wait. The setup sounds perfect. The only suggestion I would make would be to have a Mamba Max and BEC handy. It would suck to wait all that time and do all that work, just to have it sit for another month or so while your Monster is being fixed/replaced.

I got a BEC handy which I might use for the 1st few runs, don't have the MM anymore, sold it to fund for this project, if the MMM fails and they haven't gotten the bugs worked out yet will try out a MM

HaaaaYYYYyyy it's finally moving along!!! All rite!! :yipi: Looks great Drift Buggy!!! You’ll have to report back on your motor (I’m thinking of getting the same one!) I would value your input / experience with that and those Thunder Power V2 Extreme 5S 5000mah 25C/50C Lipo’s..
The painting turned out great!.. I wish I could half that good.. Do you know how much it weighs?. What is your gearing setup?. I looked at the RCPD kits and inquired about them for the Xray, I was informed that they haven’t even started the 808, the XB8 would be complete in two months. Again thanks for sharing your latest BAD BOY!.. Well done... Sir.. |
man that thing needs some dirt on it! lol. body looks awesome. and holy cells! three 5s's waiting to be used! you will be able to run forever!

Well, was hoping to get most of it complete today but only managed to get the esc and motor together and get servo in. Working bee on tomorrow at local track and race day on next day so probably won't get much time then either  Might have to be a late night tomorrow night. Have also decided on running a external BEC (Castle) and also have a Novak fan coming incase in the standard one dies

Well got the ESC all wired up and got the deans plugs on the batteries and charger. The battery was taller than I thought, might actually try to cut inside the battery tray down lower so the battery can sit lower as it does make the left side of the body sit up abit. Also used a dremel and made the flat spot longer on the Neu Motor. All that is really left now is to mount it all in and charge the battery and hopefully it will go.

Well this is what it looked like at the start of today
http://www.geocities.com/athowells_rckaos/rcm/006.jpg Here is a pic that you can see the front motor cover that I cut out to cover the holes. Will see how it goes, might look at putting mesh or something in front instead but will depend on the temps. http://www.geocities.com/athowells_rckaos/rcm/007.jpg Currently this is how it looks like. Just got to connect up all the wires and clean them up. http://www.geocities.com/athowells_rckaos/rcm/008.jpg |
can i just say, that that wing looks awesome :)
cant wait to see how it goes. |
It's going, had it running for around 10 minutes with no problems about from the toe being out on the front tyres. Also, when connecting the battery the connectors do a little spark which would probably be from the ext. bec being on, not sure if there is a way around this.

briang has a calulator and instructions to install caps to prevent this. it happens when the caps in the esc charge up. hope this helps :)

Well had it going for 15 minutes out the front of my house playing around with it, no issues at all, MMM working fine and so is the fan. Running 14T Pinion and 46T Spur temps looked pretty good.
Motor: 94F ESC: 92F Battery: 84F Air: 73F But that was with the body off |
