In San Diego for the next few days

For the AUVSI show. I don't know if I'll be able to check on this forum until this weekend. Any questions, please direct to tech support at 913-390-6939

See you all this weekend!

Autonomous and unmanned vehicles. Very expensive models, most of which don't fly as well as a $10.00 Depron foamy...

Five-oh-joe 06.10.2008 02:04 AM

Like Predator/Global Hawk or the X-47B type unmanned stuff?

skellyo 06.10.2008 09:25 AM

I imagine Castle's stuff is more suited to a UAS the size of a Raven:

Ah poo... Looks like an overglorified Hobby Zone, or whomever made it, Firebird I used to have. I was hoping for the big toys....

I've seen those before though (along with ground vehicles based on the E-Maxx platform). RC is coming through for the military; pretty cool that an RC can save someone's life.

skellyo 06.10.2008 08:10 PM

Yep, the Raven is a glorified RC plane. However, I've seen one in person along with the video downlink is provides...pretty impressive for a small package. I just may know a thing or two about these things since my primary program at work is this:

Five-oh-joe 06.11.2008 12:15 AM

I saw something like that not long ago. Maybe it was on Nova or some PBS show. Could have been from intro to engineering class though (some of the lectures were pitiful....). The amount of technology incorporated into that helicopter is scary.

You work for Lockheed right (I ask because the Apache is a Boeing produced heli)? If I'm not mistaken, you're in the Orlando area too right? I go to school at UCF, but I'm back down here in Ft. Lauderdale for the summer.

skellyo 06.11.2008 08:32 AM

Yep, I work for LM in Orlando. Boeing does make the Apache, but LM here in Orlando makes the Longbow Radar, Longbow Missile, Hellfire Missile, TADS/PNVS, M-TADS and Apache VUIT, all of which are systems installed on various blocks of Apache aircraft. I know other LM divisions have some parts on it too, but those I listed are the ones specific to my division.

Five-oh-joe 06.11.2008 01:29 PM

Oh, ok then that makes a lot of sense. I know that some of these firms collaborate on projects. I knew that Lockheed made the longbow and hellfire missiles, but I didn't know they made the longbow radar and all the other things you mentioned.

Does the Orlando office have internships/co-ops? I'm going to talk to whomever my new guidance couselor is when I go back up and ask them what co-ops/interships are out there for next summer, since I have to take two or three courses over that summer (may as well have a job that will give me experience while I'm at it too).

Are you in an engineering major? If so, what discipline? I know some of the functional directors here and have no problems sending folks resumes for summer interns.

lutach 06.11.2008 04:30 PM

I just wish I had the kind of funds the US Government has and you guys would see just amazing things. A lot of the things I see being made could be simple, but sometimes the ones who makes them just seems to make them too complex to work good.

Aerospace Engineering major. Just finished up my first year. Two more math classes to go! WOOO! I get to take statics in the fall. I hear we get to make a pasta bridge (gee...sounds like highschool again).

I'll keep that in mind for when I'm back up at school. Thanks, as I certainly appreciate it! I think I'm taking, at most, 3 classes for next summer, so while I'll still be going to class probably 5 days a week, it won't be for the entire day like my schedule for fall and spring.:gasp: About how far are the Orlando offices from UCF, if you know? I need to consider gas. My Subaru gets great mileage on the highway, but city it's kind of a pig for a four cylinder (at least compared to most of my friends' civics and corollas).

Lutach- The U.S. Government "makes up" its funds to some extent (I'm pretty sure that's how most of the world has worked; on good faith that there's SOMETHING backing all of the world's currencies...even though there really isn't...).

Heh, you have two math classes to go, I only have one :na:. I also get to take statics next quarter. Should be fun!
