good charger?
 

hello all, im looking for a good charger if anyone can suggest some
all i need really is:
to be able to run off AC and 12V DC
charge lipo and nimh
and thats about it realy, obviously i want a good quality one to keep lipo's safe, unsure of wether or not i would want a balance charger? it sounds good that it does both at the same time but i have heard they are not as good as a seperate balancer???
anyway i was looking at the Hyperion EOS0606i AC/DC Balance Charger
or this if it is any good as i may be able to save a few ££

I would go with the EOS 0606i as it is one of the most capable chargers on the market. I believe it comes with a built in balancer as well. Another capable charger is the SuperBrain 989, but you have to get a seperate balancer to charge LIpos. From all of the hype I have seen these are the two best and most popular chargers in our hobby with the most to offer for the money spent.

agreed to the above post. I personally have a super brain 989 and a flight power v balancer and love it.

I do like my eos's inc 606i however it does have a lowish power rating which means larger / high voltage packs can take a while...

If on a major budget Hobbycity i think has a clone of the 606i but mike sells the original i think...

I have a 0610 and I love it, it is easy to use, works well, and can handle my 10,000mah batteries. Only thing to mention about the 0606 is that I think it can only handle 50Watts (~3.3 amp charge rate at 4S) which is why I went with the 0610.

yes, as mentioned above, a $40 psu from hobby city will allow you to charge larger (4s 4600's) packs at 10A.(dont do that unless you have lots of money (to pay for the house are burns costs) or 10K packs...

from what ive seen, ac/dc are limited pretty much to 50w. this is because they use a laptop power supply (open your charger i dare you!)

hope this helps. it really depends on what capacity and voltage your going to be running.

The 50W power limit is in the charger not just the PSU (according to the manual, the charge power is max 50W, no matter what power supply you use). Most chargers that size, whether ac or dc seem to be 50W limited.

So if you charging a 4s pack, would be max ~3A charge.

for now it will be 3S 8000mah but i would like to get a charger that will charge larger packs if i ever upgraded or got a new car

I would get the 0610i chargr than and the ofna 18 amp PS I have both and the largest pack I own is a 6s 5000 FP an it charges it with no problems and it could do more

if you are going 3s 8000 and you want to charge at 1C then you need at least 100W (most people suggest to overestimate by 20%) so you need at least 120W to be safe, at 12V (what most power supplies output to you would need a 10A continuous, so a 15-20A PS (if you go with a 13.8A supply you would need a minimum of 9A but 12-20A to be safe.
If you go up to 4S you would want to be closer to 18-20A+ power supply.
