building my own esc? parts?
 

I would like to try to build my own speed control, but have no idea where I could get any of the parts. does anyone know where I could get everything and exactly what all i need? thanks

unless you are a EE with LOTS of expierence dont bother....:lol:, you than have to have good software which would take being a SW guru....

Just go to Radioshack and get a PC heatsink and some wire. Shoe Goo them together and you have an ESC comparable to a 15 minute old MMM :) Sorry, I 'm a Jerk. I still love Castle though.

If you wanted to try and make a sensored ESC that would be much easier. At least from a SW standpoint.

At one time there were kits available to build speed controls for brushed motors. I built several. Most used multiple mosfets in parallel (TO-220 case) , op amps like a NE544 and IIRC ran at a 60 hz frame rate. The kits ran 30-50 $ and worked quite well. This was 15 to 20 years ago. I doubt anyone now would be able to market a kit for a brushless speed control at a decent price-much to complex. Don

Way back, maybe 30 years ago, when Novak first started---and even earlier when Bob worked for Micro Avionics and then Orbit, there were companies that kitted up parts for electronics. I think Ace and Royal Electronics sold servo kits and probably receiver kits.

I don't remember anyone kitting up speed controls. Even the earliest Mosfet escs--for cars-- in the early 80's were pretty challenging. I do remember when a Novak employee---Eloy Marez, who wrote articles for one of the airplane mags, did a piece on building a simple esc. But, I believe, it was for an air model.

Yup- I built several Royal and Ace rx kits and a # of Ace servos( loved those Bantum Midgets). The speed control I used in my RC-10T was put out by Howard Cano. I think he also put out a line of kits under the name of Eldenken Electronics-both were in Arvada Co. The speed control I used in my RC-10T used a NE544 and 3 IRFZ-42 mosfets, one for brake and two in parallel for throttle. I still have the instruction set and schematic. I also built a peak charger from Cano- I still have it and the last thing I knew it still worked. (nicad only) Building those kits was fun, economical and challenging. Don

Of course, if you want things like reverse (need an H bridge for that, or a relay to reverse motor leads), and programming options, it gets more complex. :smile:

Seems easier to simply buy one off eBay, unless you're just looking for something to do.

I'm really just looking for something to do. Seems like it be cool to build and run your own esc... might end up buying a cheapo off ebay to see if itll somewhat handle my revo or another larger truck.
