Medusa 2000 in Erevo
First run,hit 48 mph.On 4s lipo geared 24/58.( I was aiming for 43,guess the tires ballooned a little extra)But neither the Quark 80 or the Medusa liked it after about 15minutes.Motor was 158,esc only read 140,but the little red light was flashing and it put the brakes on?????.It was 85 outside and I was running hard so all and all not horrible.I'm waiting on my 20tooth pinion to show so I'll probably just throw the 68 spur on if it will fit.That should gear me to 38+ so I'd imagine it will be okay.Then I'm gonna throw some more voltage at it and see how that goes.I like the motor as long as I get the temps steady,which going from this run shouldn't be a problem.But it could use more torque.It's at least not overpowered yet.
So Next run,Geared 68/24 had to mod the motor mount but it worked. Went 5s but they are little 4000mah hecell.Hit 47 mph,motor 140 ,esc 125, batts 97.A little shorter run but wot alot.Much more torque.Wheelies at about 30.I bet if they were a good 5s I would be over 50.I'll find out tomorrow how it really does bashing.But so far I'm thinking it's a good combo.Basically it looks like it should do what I want.40ish on 4 ,50ish on 5 and 60ish on 6.Though I bet the esc wouldn't like 6 to much. __________________ |
158 on the motor really aint to bad, and for that kind of speed! that motor is pushing that thing well

that sounds good to me. especially for a fairly cheap motor. I just ordered a 1300kv today to run on 6s so I should get basially the same performance as you but on a higher voltage.

Yeah , alland all I'm pretty happy.We have a bash planned for today and I'll be trying 6s ,I think it's gonna do good. Someone was running the 1500 and wasn't real happy with it.Was only seeing speeds in the high 30's ,I'm not sure if your gonna turn the motor fast enough to make it happy.Mine seemed to like 5s better then 4s.I bet you'd need 30volts on that 1300.But I could be wrong.I was starting to have alot of doubts about being happy with the 2000.

How many cells were they running the 1500kv on? I had a 1700kv neu on 5s and it was a little more then I needed. I really just want it to be track speeds. High 30's to 40.

The medusa's are quite a bit smaller than the neu. I think they are good motors but you will need the 2000kv on 6s geared for 40-45 for it to be reliable. I suffered heat issues all around with the 1500kv in my maxx. I had to gear my 1500kv down to around 32-33 mph for the heat to stay in check. But we also have 98+ ambient temps in Houston with very high humidity, most of the time 80% and more. Cooler climate setups may have better luck. This does tell me one thing though and that the medusa's in a monster truck are going to be a very gearing sensitive setup.
Great motors, and I think the 70 and 80 mm versions will be excellent for bigger vehicles but I think the 60mm is better suited to a buggy. |
I bashed mine pretty good today and it never broke 150,Thats with same gearing which ran 47.I think with a heatsink it will have no issues.Thats on 5s ,so with 6 it might actually be abit much.

FWIW, the temps on the Quark ESC may be misleading. If the internal thermal pad (that holds the FETs to the case) weakens, let's go, or is making poor connection, the heatsink will seem cool, but the FETs are actually really hot. Take the temps at the motor wire output. If they are really high, you might have to do the "internal mod" to the Quark to help cool it. This involves taking the ESC apart, removing the thermal pads, fabbing a new spacer/heatspreader, and thermal epoxying the spacer to the FETs and the case. This voids the warranty, but makes for a much cooler running ESC since the heat is being drawn away from the FETs much better.

Well, that actually makes sense. The bottom is where the FETs contact. The whole case is rather thin aluminum though, so the heat will have a harder time getting to the sides.

Got a couple more runs in on 4s.I'm really liking this motor.We were just out a half an hour bashin hard ,motor was 145,it's 81 out.Esc read 125 on the case,150 on the heatsink I added to the bottom.I was racing my son alot with a vxl 3s rustler across a parking lot so it was being pushed,then we finished with some yard bashing,and lets just say I need to mow :) It's running about 45 mph once the talons get ballooned out.Come on get those MMM shipping :)

So I pulled 54mph http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_obJSg2SIDU with the same setup using 6s hecell 4000mah.I'm plenty happy with the speed and torque of this motor.The temps on the motor haven't been bad ,but I went ahead and got a motor heatsink from Medusa for it.For the price I don't see how it gets better then this motor.
