Has anyone used the Mystery 80 amp ESC?

If so, what has been your experience with it?

I know it doesn't have conventional brakes or reverse, but how does it perform?

Is a Pistix adapter required for a regular trigger controller?

I used one in a boat, and you will have to run a pixstix. Not sure how well it would work in a car, as the startup seemed kinda soft...

Well actually, I'm considering a pair of these ESC's to power a pair of Mamba Max 4600's in a boat.

I wonder if I could run a single pistix adapter through a Y connector to control both ESC's.

You should be able to do that. You may have to setup each esc individually and then plug the y cable in.

What voltage do you plan to run? If 4s or less, the aquacraft esc from the supervee 27 is pretty good and not very expensive...

I still need to pick up a pair of water cooling sleeves for the 4600's. I'm considering a silicone version like the supervee uses.

What voltage? I'm gonna try it on a pair of 10,000mah 2S Lipo's at first. I know you might think this is slow, but I've never owned a RC boat before. My intentions are to "sneak up" on it. LOL

I can also go with a pair of 5000mah 20C 3S Lipo's. If that's not fast enough, I can wire the 10,000mah Lipo's as 4S and feed both controllers with a parallel harness.

The 4600's are not rated for 4S operation. I wonder if they can handle it with the extra cooling and the fact they will never be operated at "no load", such as jumping with a Car/Truck.

I have some pretty hot props, so temps will be my guide to voltage I'm sure. Along with the "control" factor. :yes:

Are you going to run the stock gearboxes in the villian? That will give you some sort of gearing options. Water cooling is great, works way better than air cooling. You may want to figure some sort of water cooling for the escs too. Having them in a sealed enviorment can cause issues if you try air cooling, I have not had much success with that myself. If you look around on OSE they have some good tech articles.

I definately want to see some pics of this boat! I need to work on my few boats and get them ready for the early fall season. Best time to play as it is a bit cooler than summer!

Yes on the gearboxes. I'm thinking of using a pair of 19 tooth pinions to start.

I've been thinking about water cooling for the ESC's. I have one of the Mystery 80 amp versions in front of me here. I've always wondered why they would completely enclose a heat sink inside shrink? LOL

Anyways, I need a Copper cooling block that water circulates through. Unwrap two of these ESC's, then "sandwich" the cooling block between them using heat sink compound between the block and the Fet's of each. Then the two ESC's can be heat shrank again to hold the entire thing together.

I'm hoping this will provide a nice compact answer to dual water cooled ESC's.

I have a pair of Mamba Max ESC's that I could use, but I see no way to water cool them without really messing them up. They are just too good in the Monster Truck realm to do that to them.

That sounds like a good idea. I have seen a few al cooling blocks made, basically you drill a series of holes through the long side of a decently thick piece, maybe 4mm holes in a 5mm thick plate. Them drill acoss the top and bottom to make a series of connected passageways. Them block off all but two of the holes with setscrews. Use some sealer on them so that they are water tight. Leave two holes opposite each other for water input and output. Them use some thermal paste and heatshrink it all back together.

Thanks for sharing that Linc. I have everything to make the cooling block now that I see how to do it. Well except for the little nipples that the cooling line hooks to. Any suggestions on those?

You've ran the Mystery 80 amp esc. Do you think it would work well for this?

You can get the nipples from aqua craft, but you may want to look around the hardware or auto parts store. I would use some small brass fittings from the auto parts store myself.

The mystery 80 seems fine, most air escs seem to work the same, and quite a few boat guys use the mystery escs with success. I think I paid 40 shipped for mine, so the price was right! Not much startup load, or spikes with a boat so you just need a decent cont rating, and 80 amps seems fine for your application.
