how long can you store lipos charged?

I have a pair of 6S packs that are fully charged for a few weeks now. How long can I keep them like this? do i need to drain them a little or something?

tc3_racer_001 06.25.2008 02:56 AM

my understanding is keep them @ 80%. it aparently stresses the cells when fully charged.

Actually it is really best to keep the cells (if storing) at 40%. Lithium Polymer has a bad calender degradation. This mean the higher the temperature and the higher the state of charge (SOC) the quicker you cells will permanently loose capacity and have their impedance grow (more voltage drop with current). Lifepo4 (A123 or similar) solve this problem by having more stable chemical composition and don't suffer from calender problems.

after a run ( at this time my lipo should be at 20% capacity) I wont charge again untill I am certain I will be running again within the next week

A week should be fine but if they sit for more for a couple weeks or a month it could be risky because the self discharge of the cell could bring it below the minimum voltage of the battery. You never usually want a resting Lipo to go below 3.0v I think.

Since the EOS0606i doesn't have a option of how much charge goes in, do I just charge till it gets to the amount I want and then turn it off?

Although lipo is not supposed to self discharge, something is going on. I stored all of mine at 50% charge when I went out of the country thinking I would be gone for 3 weeks. I was gone for almost 3 months and everyone of them had puffed a cell (the one physically on the top) when I got back.

Regular useage seems to be teh best. This is an issue where a123s seem to have a real edge.

my 5S has been sitting with 95% charge for almost 4 months now and nothing is wrong with it i check the voltage every once in a while and its at around 20V , my 3S i charged to 60% (as recommended by hyperion) and its fine too .

The best is to charge them up to nominal voltage, so 3.7 volt per cells or around 50 / 60 % capacity

I did trash (recycle) 3 puff lipo because I forget them fully charged for several month ...

I'm not sure about the 0606i but the 0610net can be set to charged at increments of 5% up to 100% full charged.

I have a 0610i and believe what you're looking for is the TCS setting - "Terminal Capacity % Selection" - see 3rd page, 2nd paragraph of the "manual", lol.

I was wondering what this was for.......
