Kyosho 777 help needed
 

I need some help. Every time I drive my Kyosho 777 WC with RC Product Designs conversion, I end up stripping the spur gear after some hard landings or violent rolls. This happens maybe every other weekend of use. How can I secure the motor to the motor mount better? I have tried mounting the Neu with just screws and I have tried with screws and washers. Even with a hint of loctite. I have also ground some of the fins away on the can that looked too close the rear center brace hoping that might be the problem. I don't know what else to try. Would one of those band clamps that secure the rear of the can work? If so, where do I procure one of those? It is frustrating to have a crowd amazed at how fast and how awesome these conversions can be, then I hear the high pitch whine of pinion spinning freely and I can hear the mumbles that they are not ready for prime time durability wise.

Are you using the metal or plastic spur?
Perhaps you could use a lock washer? (since it would dig into the metal, it might prevent the motor from slipping away?)

take a peice of paper and put it between the spur and pinion. Push the motor tight to the spur then secure all screws that hold the motor secure with loctite. Then remove the paper and you will have perfect mesh between the spur and pinion.

I think (assumed) that the issue is that the motor is moving thus changing the gear mesh. Maybe I am wrong?

possible that is why you should use loctite on all screws that go into metal.

I think you mentioned you've used some blue toctite. Check that everything else it tight - Are you getting any chassis flex which is hitting the bottom of the motor?

Double check that you havn't stripped your motor mount screws. Are you screws long enough / but not too long to touch the windings. IIRC the rcp motor mount is thicker than mikes.

I have checked the motor mount where the bearing fits in and it has no play. That was my first thought. Where can I get decent lock washers? I haven't tried them. My screws are long enough and not stripped.

I am using the Kyosho plastic spur. I'll have to try to get some good photos of my setup.

I used to strip plastic gears also occationally. Just run the steel spur gear with the RCM extra hard pinion gears and you will not have nay more problems. Promise. I havent had a single problem since I switched and I have never looked back.

There are some that swear the plastic gears are just as durable as the steel gear setup, but I think they are just kidding themselves. The plastic works great if everything is ideal, but the steel will stand up to more abuse.

I stripped my spur gear after a large jump that made my motor move a little (musn't of had it tight enough)

other than being a little noisey theres really nothing wrong with the steel spur

I had a similar problem, on hard impacts the motor would move away from the spur causing it to strip. The issue was I was using a Feigao 8XL and the endbell aluminum was very soft so I could not really torque the screws down the way I would normally for fear of stripping them. I temporarily got around this by adding a little tab to the motor mount on the outside edge, this tab had a screw that pushed the motor towards the spur and kept it fom moving away from the spur. It worked fine, until I finally got a better motor (Neu) where I could torque the screws properly to keep it tight and no longer needed the extra tab. In the picture you can also see the bracket I made to hold the Feigao endbells on.
