switching from 48 to 32 pitch need help

Guys I've been a brushless guy for a while now and run those motors mostly in traxxas cars and trucks. I have a question about switching from 48 to 32 pitch gears on the rusty/pede/bandits. One of the trucks is a pede with a traxxas V system geared 18/86. Runs great but keeps stripping spurs. Motor just makes too much power (and I'm rough on them) I want to switch to 32 pitch gears but don't know how to figure out the gearing using te new pitch. Also where can I get spurs that'll work with the stock slipper ?

Thanks

Two things you have to watch for is gear diameter and ratio.

Your existing 48p setup is:
Diameter of 86T = 46.57mm
Diameter of 18T = 10.58mm
Ratio = 4.778:1

Now you need to find the 32p spur with the about the same diameter. For 46.57mm, that is around 56T. Then, to get the same ratio, you need an 11T or 12T pinion.

I have a VXL Rustler that I have tried all the pitch combos if you want to go 32 pitch the Jato spurs will work (54,56,58 I believe) you can combine this with a 14-17 tooth pinion and my favorite is the Mod 1 combo using a 40 tooth Revo spur and Mod 1 16 tooth pinion , this maybe a little over geared but not bad, the Mod 1 has the bigger teeth

i run 9/40 mod1 on my slash

jayjay283 07.21.2008 03:39 PM

I did that for my vxl rustler
31t 48p =17.46mm
20t 32p =17.46mm

76t 48p spur = 41.48
wanted a bit bigger spur (had the cogs)
So 54t 32p = 44.45

edit: thanks to Brians calc ! like I would've/could've done the math lol

A buddy has an older Stampy with this same problem... could one of you list the parts required to do the Mod1 conversion?

Again, this is for an older plastic-geared trans, he does have the aluminum idler already. Traxxas or Tower part numbers would be much appreciated.

Other than spur and pinion, I'm guessing only the newer input shaft and slipper assy. will be needed. My other concern is motor shaft length. He's got a few yr old Novak 8.5 5800 kv unit
and with the increased offset of the new slipper I'm wondering if there'll be a problem getting full mesh?

Great guys thanks for all the advise. couple of more quick questions. I looked at towers site and decided to buy the spur listed below. Will this work with the stock pede XL5/VXL slipper ? Is it a direct bolt on ? Also looking at a great planes s-600 motor for a pede with IMEX 5.5 tires. Will the S-600 fit the pedes gear box. I believe I read it will fit anywhere a standard 540 / 550 motor will go.

Thanks Again

Yes, pede/rusty/bandit have same slipper as the emaxx/erevo and that spur fits all 5.... I dunno how big that motor is but emaxx motors fit in the pede, just gonna need some heavy duty rear springs.

couldnt i use a bore reducer?
im running brushless in it on mod1 but if i were to switch back to stock to run in the wet it would be nice not to have to change the spur and everything

Great i'm putting my order into tower today. With the S-600 motor I would assume it could be geared more like a titan than a normal 540 sized motor. Since i'm making the switch to 32 Pitch I might as well do it on all my traxxas stuff So I'll swap over my low buck basher pede as well. How would you gear a Pede with 5.5 tall Imex tires and a S-600 motor?

I'm thinking 56T spur with a 16T pinion. Can I go higher on the teeth on the pinion ?

Thanks Again guys.
