Crawler build
Howdy. I've decided to build a crawler. I'm thinking probably the AX10 ARTR will do the job, unless anyone wants to say anything to make me steer clear of it?
I had read a while ago of people using Mamba 25s and stuff in crawlers, and without looking again, I went a bought my brothers Mamba Micro Pro esc that I was planning to use. This will be a pure crawler, I've got 6 other cars, including a 1/8th monster I use for general bashing. Will that ESC be really inadequate? It will be geared for serious crawling, I dont need speed out of it. I tried to look again and everyone is using 1/10th esc's now, MM and sidewinder etc. I was planning to run the Mamba Micro pro and an Axi 28 series outrunner on 1100mah 4s A123 packs. Probably a 2826/10 or /12 Does this sound like a bad idea? I thought it sounded pretty awesome at first to be honest :) Let me know what you guys things (especially JRH, I've got this strange feeling your pretty experienced with crawler setups ) :P Sam |
Are you going to be competing, or just playing around with it?
The mamba micro Pro would work mighty well actually, even on a 55t brushed motor. |
just playing.. I don't know of any comps here. How come?
The amount of sweet piles of rocks I see around my bashing grounds and try and crawl over with my revo is slowly getting to me. I need to conquer them lol. |
I just remembered the axi 28 series have a 5mm shaft which probably isn't necessary... it also means i'd have to either buy a bunch of new 5mm 48p or pinions, or somehow jimmy a mod1 spur it. probably not too hard, but I think I'll try a brushed 55t to start with then. Is the novak fifty five a good choice?
|
An Axi 2217 would work...I've got a 2217/16 on 3S in one of my crawlers
|
Do you need the special motor plate for that? I think the 28 series have a 540 bolt pattern. I haven't been able to find a description anywhere, but I'm guessing the ax10 outrunner motor plate is there so you can run the smaller outrunners...
|
Yeah, that is the purpose of the AX10 outrunner plate. I had some adapters made up myself so that one wouldn't have to swap tranny plates every time he wanted to use a different motor.
The novak motor is OK, it is the same as the integy 55t but higher priced. I would suggest the AX10 kit if you aren't going to be competing, and even if you do compete it will be very worthy. Familiar with this site? http://thecrawlpit.com/forum/index.php |
Yeah I originally was looking at the ax10 kit. Is there any reason to go with the kit over the ARTR? I can get the artr for only like $20 more and it has the heavy duty diff spools and bent links and a few other things that sounded nice... proline tyres..
I'll check out that site thanks Sam |
I have a Wheely king that has been heavily modified, not much hpi on it. we are doing comps and such. I have seen just about every crawler goes through major mods to fix problems.... I got a used wheely King in a package deal so it was the platform to work with. it was definately rough
take a look at amain hobbies and look at the Berg... that's my next purchase. for what you will spend getting the ax fixed up, you can have one of the nicest machined crawlers made. all cnc aluminum etc allready. |
So what needs fixing on the AX10? The only stuff I found was that the kit form chews through the diff lockers easily, and from what I read the artr was really solid.
Supposing I did go the berg, would the micro esc still be OK to power two 55t motors? |
The knuckles need to be aluminum.
The berg would need two of the smaller ESCs IMO. In a dual motor stall you could easily blow a row of FETS on the MMiP |
Yeah I ended up going with the ax10. I'll run the mmip in hi power brushed mode so im using all the fets - no reverse but ill put up with it for a while, itll keep the esc operating. :P
I picked up some alloy knuckles too. I've been looking at further upgrades, I think next might be a pair of GH alum axles and maybe some alu beadlockers all round, i think that should significantly lower the cog :P will see how it goes before I fork out that much for some upgrades, just the axles and wheels mentioned above would set me back what the truck was worth new lol. |
I really like using Erickson for my beadlocks. The bead set is awesome and the little details he puts into them are nice. He was also the first person to produce beadlocks for crawlers.
