Overpower my gearing.....
Car - Nitro TC3 converted to brushless. Running a Mamba Max 4600 setup on 4s LiPo.
Issue - gearing is higher than it should be, so I'm having some heat issues. Nothing thermalled yet, but it's toasty to the touch. I'm toying with the idea of overpowering the gearing. While I know that for efficiency, more volts with lower kv is better, but if I just put in too much power, like a Monster Truck style setup in the touring car, will that essentially keep things under control temp wise? I'm thinking of ripping the Quark 125/Neu 1515 1/y out of my MGT conversion, and gearing up even more, since that system is ridiculous in the monster truck, throws it around like a little toy and only gets warm. The Mamba is a bit hot for speed runs anyway (what I'm using the car for), that 4600 kv is rough with gearing. Anyone done similar and how were results? Or anyone care to say yes or no to it solving my issues (working around them really, not solving). Why not gear down and RPM up? The mount I made won't allow me enough adjustment. Can I revamp that? Maybe, but I don't have the machinery to get that nuts fabricating what I need. I planned on using really tall gears, I just need a way to turn them. And, the extra weight of the MT setup won't be such a bad thing at top speed, it already slides around too much. Thanks all, 10k |
Many of the high speed set ups use a very large oversized motor to turn tall gearing. If it is for speed runs, go for it.

I've developed a new philosophy when it comes to power setups. If you want something to run cool, it needs to be "over the top" in terms of power capabilities. This way, you accomplish two things: A) a system that isn't near as stressed under normal circumstances as a "lesser" setup, and B) PLENTY of room to step it up when the power/speed bug bites.

I thought more about this last night, I'm going to throw in a bigger powerplant, I just have to figure out what.
I'm thinking of trying an all in one setup, like a Novak or Castle Creations Monster Max, to keep prices down. I think even a "lesser" setup of the monster series is still plenty of power so I don't really need to go nuts with a custom configuration. |
You guys are nuts . You guys with all your overpowered vihecles should be banned from RC .
I say the more power the better. Go all out with your TC3. |
