Question about "long shank" pinions
 

How long does the motor shaft have to be to accommodate the pinion?

Not very- thats the whole point of the long shank pinion, so that a short shafted motor (tee-hee) can still have a pinion fitted that reaches the spur for a good mesh/contact area.
