Quark 125b help please
Does anyone have really good knowledge of how 125b settings affect the heat of the ESC and motor? I've using one for 2 years now, really smooth and works great, but with my 1512/2D/S I can't gear above 12/46 (calculates to ~32mph) on an RC8 without things getting pretty hot (at 14/46 I thermalled after 7 minutes and motor was at 190ish) But I see other people geared for 40 mph saying things run fine. I've been running with no fans forever to simplify things and it does run great, just not crazy fast in the long 180' back straight at our track. BTW we run 15min mains and it makes it fine at 12/46 but I've had the motor up to 190-200 a couple of times now and don't like doing that. (I have one of the Neu's thats hard to turn the shaft by hand, not the newer ones that rotate easily)
So back to my original question, which settings affect ESC and motor heat? Such as: Battery Selection: Lipo high = hotter ESC and motor Lipo Normal = cooler ESC and motor (I assume, but are these right?) Does custom cutoff voltage make a difference like on the MM (I use one in 1/10 4WD) Drag Brake higher = Hotter ESC (I think), Motor (?) Torque Selection = This I really am unsure of, does "smooth initial torque" draw some of the energy out of the system and actually make the ESC hotter? |

On my first one (about 2.5 years ago now) the guts came loose after about 6 months and i did the mod with thermal epoxy and a piece of aluminum, that worked great for a while but then some minor board component got damaged and I sent it in and they gave me a new one. This one I've been running for a while with just a modified PC heatsink thermal epoxied to the case which works well also, the heatsink gets nice and toasty. Then the guts came loose in this one and instead of the permanent case mod I cleaned the thermal pad with rubbing alcohol which actually made it sticky again, and modified the endcaps to allow me to ziptie the board very tightly back to the case and thermal pad. It looks a little hacked, but it seems very solid (and reversible) and the case and heatsink heat up just as they should. So any ways, everything works fine, I just don't know how some settings actually effect temps and haven't had a chance to systematically check and measure and change things. (And also my ESC button is starting to get very finicky and its a pain to change settings often) |
Mods
I've had mine modded and it still gets hot. I think maybe heatsink and fans are the only way on these. The more airflow the better!

The internal mod simply allows the heat to transfer better to the case. A better heatsink is then needed to dissipate that heat...
