rc18t is overheating. gearing?
hey guys i got my 18t running a couple days ago and it runs great. have not had a problem with the diffs or anything yet.
only thing is that it overheats quite nicely after only 5 min of runtime. motor 120 esc 125-130 batt 110. i know these temps are ok but after only 5 min...? does not seem right. my gearing is 56/16 using a lehner 1020 and a quark 33 alonggg with a 2s MA lipo. im running it in my room with maybe half throttle the whole time. the truck does have sedan tires on it so im guessing that is not helping? it rolls pretty smoothly so i know there is no binding. im going to play with the gearing a little right now to see if that helps but can anyone else throw some ideas out there? thanks! |
Are you able to test it with some WOT runs outside? On a bl motor it's harder on it to run half-throttle than full, right?
|
It's got to be the gearing and the sedan tires.
|
you may be right kulang. theres no point in me testing it outside right now because its around 110.
tonight when it cools down ill give it a good test. how long should i run it before i take temps? 10 minutes? 15? also. right now i ran it for about 20 minutes in my room and again after 5 min everything was around 110-125. but i kept going and after 20 minutes it didnt change much. so i think thats good? |
Yeah, I'd be okay with those temps after 20 minutes of indoor stuff at half throttle.
I'm guessing after your test tonight, you're temps will be looking good. Just take temps every five minutes until you're convinced. |
I don't know the kv value of your motor but I have a cc 5400kv motor and a mamba25 my temps where similar except hotter motor but after 30+minutes with 55/15 gearing and stock size tires. I'm sure the touring tires aren't helping any

i figured buying a higher end setup that it would not overheat at all... i guess it does not make all that much of a difference.
ill be ordering different tires once i sell some stuff on ebay. im just laggin it real bad. |
I run my 18b inside w/a 2100 MA 2s pack for up to 45 min. non stop w/out heating issues. We run mostly 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, but, we are constantly on/off the brakes. We are using foam tires.

well i think my 33 fried right now.
wha do you think the best controller for these applications are? the mamba micro pro? i actually was not impressed with the quark at all. thanks! |
tmaxx when i built this truck i based most things off of this project, http://www.beatyourtruck.com/project-RC18T.html they used 13/60 gearing with the sedan tires and a 8000kv motor

i remember when i used to have the mamba25 it also had heating issues...
i do have one right now that just needs to be sent in. i think i will do that. see how i like it. does quark have any type of repairs they do? bl-is-future ill have to try out that gearing to see if it makes any difference. it sure is a sweet truck though. cant wait to get it running perfect. |
