Non RC controller
 

I'm looking to make an electric vehicle, and was wondering if any of you know where I can get a speed controller that isn't rc. I just want to have like a lever or a knob or something like that.

All I've found so far is huge scale stuff. (it went with a 37MW with 2mil lb-ft of torque) Talk about powerful. I bet my house could do 0-60 in under 10 seconds with that thing :lol:

I guess it depends on what kind of vehicle you are looking to create. An e-bike that goes a max of 30mph will take a lot less power than a converted 2500lb car that can go 60mph+.

The Special Projects portion of Castle's site is more towards the e-bike level of vehicle. If you're looking for converting an actual car, you might want to PM ZeroPointBug as he is currently converting a truck and has already gotten the motor for it.

To tel you the truth, I really haven't decided. I'm thinking about a e-bike (thought up a few desings that would allow you to pedal and have a large outrunner motor and keep it under 35lbs) I was also thinking about a small car but really don't know what batteries I could use for it. The Castle controllers seem a little pricey and they don't exist yet, right?

I'm leaning more to something smaller, just because I don't have the cash right now to convert a 1:1 car.

Yeah, I've been toying with the same things. Personally, anything bigger than an e-bike gets more difficult. There are a lot of e-bike solutions that will offer decent runtimes/distance and allows you to pedal to increase it a bit.

With larger vehicles, you get into runtime and weight issues, and the sheer amount of battery power they need. As you get heavier, you need higher voltage to deliver the power required, but this requires a LOT of batteries, which makes things heavier. Not to mention the rapidly increasing pricetag of something larger.

Then you have to consider your local, state, and federal laws regarding custom vehicles. There are restrictions in speed, size, style, safety, etc you have to know.

An e-bike is probably the most economical way to go and should stay within fed/state/local laws. But TBH, using R/C electronics is probably more expensive than an off-the-shelf solution. Here is a site where you can get a 1000w (36-48v) BL motor/ESC combo for $350. Then, you also need ways to mount everything, and some type of throttle control, which that site most likely has.

how about a controller suitable for a brushed motor (1500W or something, 24V) for a razor mini chopper? where do i get somethign that will work (internationally.) also where can u get motors which will work for this? thanks guys!

Honestly the Castle HV110 is a great choice for brushless motors if you can do without the sensor harness. I have 5 hub motors coming to me so I can build up a few Ebikes, and I also have a gearbox in proto stage so that fast brushless motors can be used on Ebikes. A decent conversion with no batteries will run you around $500 in electronics, and using RC equipment is both cheaper and a LOT lighter. 1hp from a 7 pound hub motor plus a few pounds of controller, or 1hp from a 14 ounce motor and 5 ounce controller. Which sounds like a better choice?
