What is that dang clicking noise?

So I was driving my newly put together E-Maxx today and the thing really started to click every time I would give it some trigger. More so forward than reverse. I think I traced it to the rear diff, but, it doesnt sound like metal gears clicking, it sounds like a plastic click. Is that really the gears inside clicking?
Thanks.

do you have the sliders for the centre? cause my rear one clicks when i go from reverse to foward.

It could be the gears inside the diff. I had the same noise in my revo and it turned out to be the diff gears.

Do you run plastic diff cases?

coolhandcountry 11.01.2005 01:53 PM

If you run the metal cvd. I have seen the pin come out of the cvd and click on the chassis.

Everything on the truck is bone stock (for now), palstic sliders and diff case. How do I fix this? I am assuming I would need to shim the gears if this is the problem, but I don't wan't to tear everything apart if that's not the prob.
Thanks.

it really is hard to tell!!

Isn't it the play that's on the gears/shafts in the tranny?

coolhandcountry 11.01.2005 07:56 PM

My rear was clicking to one time. I needed new gears. Have to take it apart tought to see. If not run it until it quits. :D that will show you the problem then.

It sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle. Guess I'll tear it apart and see what the gears look like. Anyone know what I will be looking for on the gears? Worn teeth would be my guess.

squeeforever 11.01.2005 08:56 PM

worn or stripped teeth.

What happens if you spin just the back tires over? If you have to put a little drag on the front ones of the spur gear to. Sometime you can feel them slipping.

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 11.02.2005 01:06 AM

I turned the truck upside down and spun just one of the back wheels. Just by doing that it would click. It's pretty bad. It didnt do it on the front though. I'll take it apart tomorrow and see what she looks like.

i had a similar probl;em with my LST - turned out it was the diff cases had cracked and the teeth were hitting the case, as it was being warped everytime throttle came on....

hope that made sense - ummm - look at the diff case for cracks etc -lol-

btw, if it's any help - it was a VERY small hairline crack in my diff case - making it pretty tricky to find :)

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 11.02.2005 03:41 AM

Cool, thanks, I'll look for that as well.

RC-Monster Mike 11.02.2005 07:58 PM

Usually, the "clicking" is due to the pinion gear jumping the ring gear inside the diff case. Only a matter of time with the plastic diff cases.
