MMM runs Novak better than Novak
I just tried my MMM for the first time today and I am glad to report that my HV 4.5 motor ran better on the MMM esc than it did on the HV-maxx esc.
Throttle was just as smooth and so were the brakes, only cogged once, but instead of getting about 12 minutes of runtime like i did with the novak esc, I got over 15 minutes of runtime, taking temp readings every now and then. The only thing I noticed was that the throttle would cut out for split seconds at a time occasionally during acceleration, but I believe this is a radio interference issue. My mamba max does this some times and rarely, my novak esc does it as well. Overall I am very satisfied. Everything ran about 10 degrees cooler and that was with 10 degrees timing. Gonna try 0 degrees. Motor 172 Esc ??? fan only came on once breifly during run so 150? Case was 106 Battery 118 Setup is the 8ight in my signature geared with a 9 tooth pinion. |
Another Novak shortcoming... How surprising. |
Did you just hook it up with out the sensor wires? And what batteries were you using with this combo?
|
Yep, no sensor wires. A Neu Energy 30C 4100 mah 4s was the battery.
|
I'll have to give that a try, and see how it compares to the 10L.

Novak
mmm interesting,
Novak may have its shortcomings, but at least it runs most of the time unlike the Hiroshima MMM. I know which one I would choose at present. |

Lets see, had a losi xxx-t bl truck that died about 2 mins in to the first run. Had a few ss escs mysteriously drop a few fets and cogg terribly. My crawler esc does not work properly, no drag brake and weird reverse issues. I have had good success with the 2 gtb escs I have, although a friend had issues with his. Novak fans lose blades quite easily. I have not owned a hv esc, just cannot bear to part with that kind of cash for something so poor... Novak service was decent, around 2 weeks to get replacements. Many people will mod the hv escs to handle a single pack (short sighted by novak to assue 2 packs would be used). And the internal bec cannot be used with a single pack. I have had better luck with CC products. I have only smoked one MM and that was trying to run it with a 7xl, geared for 55mph. Worked fine till I got a rock stuck in the spur and over drawed the esc till the solder melted... Have a v1 MMM that has 6+ hours on it and still working. I have 2 v2 MMM that I will be testing too. Just trying to say that every company/product has issues. Plus the novak hv setup is very gearing sensitive, and not powerful enough to push a MT or truggy fast. Will work fine with a buggy, and the new hv pro is a step in the right direction. Not going to compare to a 1515 1Y and a MMM. The novak will run with maxamps packs though:party: |

When the HV system came out, it had its fair share of issues as well. When they started with the 4.5, when used with lipo is was melting controllers left and right. Until novak ironed out the kinks, they had remanufactured units availble in their site constantly. My issue with the novak is not so much power as it is expensive for what you get and way behind the times. I mean they just got a built in LVC, the programming is still minimal, and the performance is only marginal.
I have also melted two Novak brushed ESC's set up well withing spec and it took near two months both times to get them replaced. Nobody is impervious to failure and I think linc's analogy of the underware is spot on pun intended! |

In a mostly stock emaxx with the recommended gearing I am sure that the HV is fine. Keep the weight down and the gearing conservative and it will perform as advertised. But that is it, you buy it and install it and that is the end of the HV. No programability, or upgradability. Plus it is a bit pricy considering the competition. A MM is much cheaper, can run a variety of motors, and has full adjustability. Personally, I have enough driving under my belt that a vehicle that does less than 35mph is boring, and I have most of my collection geared for 45mph now. For an entry level bl system the HV is fine, and it is a viable alternative for a race bl setup in an 1/8 buggy, especially considering novak makes conversion kits for buggies. Still too expensive for what you get, IMO... Quote:

I think we may see the price point come down in the near future. About a year or two ago, you really didnt see many mainstream brushless conversations except on this site. Now, even on the Traxxas site, there are probably about 40% running some form of brushless. Competition will drive that price down. But until someone else offers a plug and play setup, they are still the only game in town in that regard. CC's offering, once they get it to actually run, will likley be a much better system for the money.
