Puffed lipo by shorting?

Hi guys,
I got a Neu 3s 5000mah lipo the other day. I was soldering deans to it and accidently touched the two wires for a split second. it made 3 sparks. Basically i am asking if i have ruined my new lipo. i think it has puffed a bit but it could be my imagination.

many thanks

very well could have damaged it. I don't have any first hand experience but from what I've seen on here a quick touch generally doesn't damage them.

If only for a split second you should be fine - Remember the spark you get when you first plug in a battery to an ESC - This is like a short as the Caps soak up the voltage very quickly.

I'd be suprised if you've puffed it - Check your voltage on all cells. Post up a picture...

But be careful! Not worth buring the house down...

Dupe post -

again sorry for the dupe post. you can delete the other one or wotever lol. i'll try and get a pic of it. i actually bought 2 of the same lipos, so this is why i think it is puffed because it feels squishy on top and the other one is solid.

What charger / balancer setup do you have - does it have built in volt meter? Do you use a lipo sack?

these are brand new batteries. never been charged or used. im new to electric so im not really sure what is considered a puffed lipo. ive taken some pics so i'll try and upload them

the 'puffed' one is on the left...

the caps soak up the voltage very quickly... but when i shorted it the cells must have absorbed the voltage

any thoughts? i know the pics arnt very clear. should i send it back to Neu? they sed i could, but im not sure if it is considered puffed. it just feels squidgy and the other one feels solid.

jayjay283 09.12.2008 02:45 PM

Send it back Rev:-o, I gather from your posts on Traxxas you dont have a esc, motor or truck yet, so you have some time. If Neu said they'ed take it back, send it back and consider it lesson learned

i think i'll take your advice jayjay. the only thing is ive soldered deans to it. but if they ask i can just say the shop i bought it from did it for me. www.flydma.com do it anyways

Electric Dave 09.12.2008 05:06 PM

It doesn't look puffed to me. I'd run it!

What are the voltages on each cell?

entjoles 09.12.2008 05:31 PM

it should be fine , i have done the same thing

hootie7159 09.12.2008 05:45 PM

i've done the same as well when i soldered deans to my 2s 5000mah tp lipos....only a split second of sparks....i ran it til LVC, charged it back up and nothing was wrong with it  you should be fine...
