5s in slash?
 

anyone thought of running or has run 5s in a slash, i was looking at another motor for my slash and was thinking of going with a 36x50 medusa 1600kv on 5s 4000mah i was just thinking how of much runtime i would get over my 9L with 3s 5000 pack, i get 40-45 mintues with it how it is, so the more and effeicent and more powerful 5s setup should put me well into the hour+ runtime club, and by as a whole the 5s system only weighs 30 grams heavier so thats not even an issue since it basically weighs the same as a stock slash and 6cellnimh pack.

what the input guys? good idea or what? whats the rule we have at rcm no such thing as too much power right? i guess i could do a 1500kv 60mm verison, then id have a spare motor for my xray if ever needed?

Which speed control would you use?
I would guess you are better just sicking to 3S and buy an 8000mah pack or something similar for longer runtime. My 3s 5000mah pack gets me 50mph and doesnt overheat and anything more than that in a slash is just not usable power.
A medusa over a feigao will get you longer run times just because its more efficient and will use less amps for the same power. So just by swapping out motors you could get longer run time.
5S might be a bit overkill for that truck, but its dooable.

the motor would be turning the same rpm as my 9l on 3s 5000, but the higher voltage would be more efficent, mine is also geard for 45+ and i dont have any heat problems i was just thinking about it since i have 3 5s 4000 packs that i use in my buggy and my 3s5000 maxamps has just about lived out its life (its over a year old so im not expecting to last much longer) it wouldnt be any more powerful than my 9l and 3s it jsut wont be working as hard as my 9l and 3s (which dont work very hard as it is). i was just thinking aloud.

Sounds like a great idea. Do you already have the 1600kv?

no i dont ive been looking at picking up a different motor for my slash and this just kinda crossed my mind because i could use my newer batts that i have more of.

Sounds like a decent plan....despite spinning the same RPMs I would bet you'll notice a TON more power from more efficiency and higher voltage. You'll also get longer runtimes from a more efficient motor pulling fewer amps. I already own a Medusa 50mm and it has holes in the can, which will allow dirt inside the motor. I already got a RC-M heatsink clamp for it and I'm going to cut up a big washer to clamp to the back and hope that keeps enough dirt out of it :neutral:

And now, onto the real problems: Traxxas doesn't really introduce new RCs, they just replace a few parts and sell it as a new RC. The Slash will probably go through parts rather quickly with that much power, their design is virtually bullet-proof for brushed motors but when it comes to BL motors you will strip diff gears, break output yokes, twist drive shafts, twist the yoke off the stub axles, and strip the hexes out (go with aluminum and you'll start stripping wheels). I know this for a fact because I have a Rustler with the same exact transmission as the Slash and with a MM 5700 I did all of the above :diablo:

ive been running my slash with the 3s 9L since they were first out i run it atleast twice a week and i have yet to break anything on it (except for the shocks pulling apart)

but i never run on pavement or anywhere that has much traction for that matter. i think this plays a big role

What pinion size then? Do they make it?

what do you mean i run 13/40 mod1 on my slash setup

If your adding motor rpms and trying to stay the same speed you'll need a smaller pinion or a bigger spur. What KV is the 9l?
