I am just curious to see if anyone is into RC tanks and has any info.

I was at an RC air show today (which was awesome, hundreds of large scale birds and many turbine jets) and was checking out the 1:16 scale tank display. The tanks all had airsoft cannons, smoke, and sound and retailed for around 75. They also had metal track and gear upgrades and you can add the battle systems to them as well. I am very interested in getting some and wanted to see if anyone else out there had any.

I am into RC tanks. I have several scales from the following manufacturers.

1/16 Scale Tamiya Tanks.

These are the 'Toy' tanks which are relatively expensive but have excellent details and electronics due to the DMD units that allow the tanks to have authentic sound, gun recoil, muzzle flash etc.. Very expensive for what they are. Cost a bomb new. Time consuming to build from kit form and need painting. Japanese made

1/16 Hen Long tanks

Same scale as before but very much on the cheaper end - fraction of the cost but one fun element that the Tamiya's dont' have - they fire platic ball bearings. This is the tank you saw that was cheap. About 1/5 of the price of the Tamiya tanks. Ready built and painted. Not in the same league as Tamiya tanks in quality and detail or drivability. The sound units don't sound very authentic and dont have the same rich sound. The anlaogy I would use to compare is a Novak Brushless Speed controller vs a Lehner Motor with a MGM speed controller - now I dont want to get flamed for this comment but hope you get the picture. Chinese made.

1/5 Scale Mark 1 Tanks

Monster tanks made out of GRP that weigh about 160lb and can pull a car - they have Golf buggy motors, have authentic sound, Gun recoil and have real blank guns to fire balnk ammo and also pyro technology to fire pyrotechnics. Very good fun. Can be purchased within a month of remitting funds. British made.

1/5 Scale Armortek tanks

Monster tanks made out of steel / Metal - weigh about 250lb and cost a bomb approx £4000 but ideal for the scale enthusiast. Detail is incredible. You can spend another $2500 on just detailing of the exterior - lights, buckets, tools etc. People have spent months adding detail such as weathering the tank with real damage, rust and mud. These tanks are made to order and usually sold out as the manufacturer takes pre-orders and then makes a run of them every couple of years.. British made.

If you want more details let me know. I happen to be fortunate enough to own a Mark1 Challenger tank and a Armortek Tiger 1 tank. I need a trailer, ramp and a hydraulic lift to manage these tanks. To move them around I need a large estate car/van.

There is another company in Germany that makes 1/5 scale Metal WWII tanks - similar in price to the Armortek. I believe the lead time is 3 months from Deposit. There is such a choice when it comes to RC ..... how about scale Model Turbine Helicopters?

They are are called 12 gauge blanks here in the UK - they have only half the gun powder from usual due to the noise and recoil from a full cartridge. I have purchased the custom made cartridges in the specified size to keep things within sensible limits but I must say I have fired a full sized cartridge and nearly jumped out of my skin!! The cartridges are the size of a wine cork. If you look at the picture carefully you can see the muzzle flash within the smoke. The barrel is over 3 feet long and I am telling you when you use a full sized cartridge the fire spits out so violently that it ends up damaging the barrel.

Thank you for your descriptions and help. The guys a dealt with yesterday were much into battle setups and modifying the cheapy tanks. The had some upgraded with the tamiya systems and better sound that still came shy of the tamiya prices.

You have a very fine collection and I really like the tractor trailer rigs as well and want to build some of those as well.

So I am I to assume the heli in your avatar is turbine? I guess I am an RC junky because I am a beginner in heli's as well. I have talked to people online with turbine helis but have never seen one in person. I have seen plenty of trubine jets particularly some very nice F-15's yesterday and a beautiful F-16 and Mig-15 as well. I am very partial to the Mig-15 for some reason.

I think I will start with the cheap chinese fair to begin with and progress from there. Since they have metal tracks available and some upgrades, I think it would be a decent start for testing the waters. Would you agree?

RCM is great for Monster trucks... can you imagine trying to keep up with different types of RC - it is a nightmare as each speciality is full of top gadgets and equipment. I have been fiddling around Monster trucks since the first t-maxx came out but only registered with RCM this year as I was getting nowhere on RCU. Wish I joined RCM earlier.

I remember when there were some of those 1/5 scale beasts on the Richard Hammond show (ITV 1) last year I think- truelly awesome toys you have there :yes:

Cheers Neil - I try and keep a bit of a variety as sometimes doing the same thing can get a bit boring. All we need is a bit better weather .. like what we have at the moment.

mohanjude, do you have any videos we could take a look at?

Quick question though, when buying the chinese RTR tanks, is it worth it to get the all metal drive and metal tracks? It seems to make sense to me but then again I have no real experience in this realm.

I have gone between there and helifreak (obviously some animosity between those to sites and two people in particular) and have some good info.

I have a CX2 and am looking at a Esky Belt CP V2 when it comes out. Don't know how much I want to get into acrobatics at this point though. Acrobatics seem much more fun/interesting in planes than heli's.
