got a simple question

I'm wanting to buy some screws but when I see a measurement of 3mmx12mm
does that mean the total length of the screw is 12mm or just the threaded part of the screw is 12mm (excluding the head)?

Thanks!

Depending on the type. If it's a countersunk type, it's the full length including the head. Otherwise, it's just the threaded part.

Thanks! That is good to know as I'm getting both types. :intello:

Don't waste your money on stainless screws - they are actually softer than "normal" screws due to the nickle content in the steel.

What he said^^^^^^

You want only 12.9 steel screws with an oxide coating to prevent oxidation. If you have a Fastenal in your area they are a good place to get screws but kind of expensive. www.mcmaster.com is the best place to order screws online.

I made sure not to get stainless. ;)

I'm actually getting the Traxxas hex screws for my 4-tec (electric). I just wanted to make sure I got the right sizes. :)

If you're ordering a bunch of different screws, I usually use these guys: http://rtlfasteners.com/RC/index.html

Good stuff. Black like Traxxas screws, but not as expensive as your LHS. Have locknuts too (which my LHS never seeme to have in stock). You could also get a kit for your specific vehicle from eBay, but the one time I did that, I found the screws stripped easily (the hex head part).

I ordered my grade 12.9 screws from boltdepot.com. A box containing 100 12mm flathead hex screws cost $8.39. Should last me a long, long time.

Damn good deal, got a link?

I'm a big fan of www.hexcrews.com It's easy to order from them in small quantities (in case you don't need 20 or 100 of a type of screw) and they ship very quickly. Their web page is very intuitive for picking out exactly what kind of screws you want as well.
