In Search of the Baddest ESC...

i have recently built a Losi 8 Tekno RC brushless conversion with a 1515 1.5F. I started with a MMM which died after 15 minutes of running. So i talked to the guys at Tekno RC and they recommended i run the MM with a BEC, which is what they all run apparently. So i hooked that up yesterday and had it on 5 minutes when i gave it a little juice the ESC blew up and send flames and sparks 3 feet in the air past my head.:surprised: Close one! So now i have on another MMM that is modded this time with the fan removed and the top casing cutoff so the heatsink is exposed to stay cool. I ran that last night in races all night and it has held up so far. Stayed cool to the touch without the fan still. Anyway, I have heard good things about the MGM ComPro controllers and Mike gets some in real soon but I just saw an ad in RC Driver today about Novak's HV Pro that is completely redesigned and for 1/8 brushless conversions. Does anyone have any experience with this ESC? I am going to be building a 1/8 truggy brushless and want the best ESC out there. is this new Novak worth considering or should i just go straight to the MGM?

First off, welcome to RC-Monster!

The first MMM that died could have been a fluke, which many others have experienced. The MM, well, that's a bit tougher. If your new MMM is doing well, then you may have gotten lucky .

MGMs are nice controllers when it comes to hardware, but in terms of software they are a bit lacking IMO. And getting service from MGM isn't the fastest/easiest since they are in the Czech Republic. Some really do like the MGMs, though.

As for the Novak, you'd have to use their motor pretty much. It's a sensored ESC, and must be run with a sensored motor. But comparing this ESC to others (not even mentioning the others) it is sub-par IMO.

Losi also have new ESC/motors available for 8th conversions. could be worth checking it *shrugs*

thanks for the input. yeah, i am hoping i got lucky on this one MMM. i saw the poll here in the forum the other day about the MMMs and it looked as though it was about 50/50 for those who had failures and those who had successes with their MMMs. i have heard that the version3 MMM should be out in a couple of weeks and everyone is hoping it will have the kinks worked out. we'll see. of course, i will put my faith in castle and be buying one of those when they arrive.

i actually have one on back order with A Main but after some testimonials i have seen online it sounds like they are dying down within minutes also. i think i am going to hold off on getting that one unless i start to hear some positive feedback first.

I would either keep sending the MMM back until they get them perfected, or buy an MGM. I'm running an old 16018 in my Muggy and it's pretty good. I like the feel of Castle controllers better (then again, mine has rather old firmware on it) but it handles my Neu on 4s/5s fairly well. I'm looking at getting another controller for my Muggy (putting the 16018 in my Hyper) and it has come down between a MMM and one of the new MGMs.

thats what i am thinking. like i said, that modded MMM is holding up so far but i am thinking i still might have to buy a MGM. i have a couple of other BL setups i want to build and if the MMM lasts i will have use for it but it sounds like the MGMs already have their kinks worked out. although, when i told the guys at tekno i was going to buy a MGM they recommended i wait 2 weeks until version 3 of the MMM comes out and save a few bucks. who knows, if V3 is perfected then the MMM would be a sweet setup. i love the 6.5mm connectors on the MMM. BTW, does anyone know what size wire is on the MGM controllers? is it at least 10 ga?

Unsullied_Spy 10.05.2008 02:44 AM

The wires are 10 ga. They hold up very well under heavy amp draws.

good to know.
