Will this setup work?
Will a 9918 with a feigao 8xl work on this truck?
My truck: 16 NIMH cells, all aluminum (UE), weighs alot (4 servos and a reciever battery made of GP 3300 i'm guessing 12-14.5 lbs as for my scale only goes up to 10 lbs), all metal tranny (ultramaxx), big 7 foot tall tires (imex K-rock). Also, if i use 4mm gold bullet connectors for my battery connection to the esc, will that be a suficient replacment (compared to deans)? Just wondering because if i use gold bullets, i can cut down my wire length from batts to esc down to about 4.5 inches! Also, does schulze have a repair service? Because i just burnt out my 18.97 and i don't want to pay $300 for a new one. If you know if they can repair it for like 100 that would be great. My esc is in perfect condition, except for one time a puff of smoke came out of it and i never tried to run it again. But it looks perfect cosmetically, except it smells burnt...but i think it would be fixable. Would it? -Hope to learn alot about BL on this forum! |
 I think you need to gear down A LOT. "7 foot" tall krocks is taller than I am...j/k. You may want to gear down or go on a diet. Sounds to me that you may give your setup a work out. Also why 4 servos?
Good luck with the schulze. They have a bad rep about warranty claims. |
arg, meant 7 inch tall tires.
4 servos, 1 shifting 2 steering 1 braking (yes braking with disc brakes, go the idea from a dude on the traxxas forum) I'm probably gonna run 18-51 or 22-51 gearing. Any comments on connectors? |
I dont know much about the bullet connectors but the deans are proven. That is what I am going to be installing over the weekend.
|
Be careful with those bullet connectors - don't reverse polarity them... Too easy to blow controllers for my taste. I like when things are idiot proof. We all do idiotic things sooner or later.
|
ya, i feel like i may screw it up, i'll do something about that though.
I also found out that Deans plugs are rated at 50amps and 4mm bullet is rated at 80 amps. So actually running the bullets is a better decision for me! |
Just be careful with the bullets. In the very least, label them with different colored tape to avoid the inevitable reverse polarity. The problem with bullet connectoers (besides the obvious possibility of reverse polarity) is that they wear out faster from being plugged/unplugged continuously. This isn't drastic wear, but the Dean's is more resistance to losing spring tension. Personally, I think the Dean's plugs are just easier to use and will perform just as well as the 4mm connectors someone has you sold on. Do you already have the 8xl motor? This or the 7xl would both work very well on a heavy truck such as yours. The 9918 will handle this duty, but your gearing is way too aggressive for normal running. If you are set on using the 51 tooth spur gear, get the smallest pinion you can find (10 or 12 is a good place to start!). 15/66 or similar is a good place to start with the stock spur gear. You didn't mention what diffs you use, either. This will effect your gearing range selections well.
Schultze will repair your controller (and blame you for the damage), but it will most likely take quite a bit of time (3 months sounds about right). I don't think the repair will be much, based on your description of the failure. Likely less than $100. |
Yes, the Male bullet connectors go bad after about 2 months. I replace them every month.
I run the 8xl. I run in very high stress enviroments. The mud i run in is basically the same substance as quick sand. So I bought the 8xl to be sure it can handle my weight, and handle my enviroment. Fortunatly i fine tuned my truck so it doesn't pop wheelies. I run the Unlimited Engineering Ultalite differential. They lower the overall ratio. The Stock ratio is 2.85:1 and the ue diff is 3.31:1. I plan on gearing for speed, what do you think i should use? |
Gearing for speed is kind of the opposite of how your truck is set up and where you run (tall tires on a heavy truck in a harsh environment). For everyday running in that environment, I would gear around 15 or 16 pinion on your 51 spur. This will put you in the high 30mph to low 40 mph range. For speed runs (assuming your speed runs will not take place in the quicksand!), you can gear a bit higher and get into the 50s fairly easily.

Thanks for the info!
I choose the tires so i can meander throughout most terrain, i bash at a contruction site so its provide a wide horizon of types of stuff i can do. Sometime i'd do mud bogging, some times i want to hit a jump at full throttle, sometimes i just run around on plain, flat gravel. So basically i do some stuff where i need lots of speed, and some stuff where i need lots of power...but mostly speed. Hows 18-51 sound? |
Sounds high for the mud bogging. I would stick to my initial suggestion (15 or 16). This will be quite fast. The 18 tooth will put you into the 50 mph range if your batteries can hold the voltage, which is pretty rediculous for everyday running, and hard on the controller in the mud!

alright, 16 it is!
I was running 24-51 on my hacker C50 7xl with a schulze 18.97kw, it was going rediculusly fast on an abandoned Naval Airstation strip. Maybe in the high 50s. But then i burn't the schulze. |
