my slash tranny exploded mid-flip

i just finished putting new bearings in my 9l, got a new spur gear, new drvie shafts and replaced my right drive yoke today so i threw the badlands on there and went to to play a little, and i was doing back flips about 20' long and a couple feet over my head in height, which is pretty normal stuff and all, so after about the 10th flips it goes upside down and i gas it to bring it on around and POW the tranny just exploded and locked the wheels up in mid air! here is waht she it looks like, and it also ripped the left driveyoke off.....

anyone wanna guess what it messed up while i take it apart?

my guess is i sheared the top shaft and lost a couple bearings, and possibly the idler gear...it sounds bad lol

oops forgot the picture

My guess is the idler blew... then lodged itself in the other gears , good job though :D

close.... actually its was the input shaft that sheared off its dowel pin and then its pieces killed the idler gear and the input gear. so now im trying to get whats left of the dowel pin out and i have another idler gear and the input gear isnt too bad its unusable, so if i can get another dowel pin in this input shaft ill be back in business because i dont have another one of those...

well i got what was left of the dowel pin out, i didnt have another the right size so i found a drill bit that was .0015 too big, cut it the right length and beat it on home... you can see part of where the input gear got eatin up a little, i guess i need to order another inputshaft because i dunno how long the drill bit will last.

I have drilled my input shafts to 2.5mm and used the revo yoke setscrew (cut the threaded portion off) in orde to strengthen that area. Then you need to dremel the idler gear gap to allow fitment of the bigger pin.

Wow! That HAD to hurt...

I've busted a few of them too. Then I replaced it with a drive pin from the wheel hubs and *poof* no more problems! That was well over 2 years ago and it's still going strong. That hollow pin they use really isn't meant for brushless-grade torque! I have noticed my input bearing is getting a little sloppy (the spur/slipper wiggles a little bit), or maybe it's the bearing recess in the FLM case?

:lol:just the usual stuff... haha

all the time mikey, that alot more tame than what the Ls10 use to go through.... it was doing 50 feet doubles, and 15 feet high backflips, and going 65 feet off a FMX ramp haha but the slash is alot harder to drive so 20' flips are its norm.

good idea with the wheel drive pin its alot bigger, ill do that when this breaks. haha i wonder what my snapon rep would think if he saw what i was doing with my drill bits!

What's_nitro? 11.08.2008 01:41 PM

I don't think he'll mind that you hacked up a single 1/16" drill bit.......

rootar 11.08.2008 09:25 PM

well the POS drill bit only lasted about 30 minutes worth of flips and mayhem at the track today...... gotta try some of the other suggestions, anyone have any pics of theirs they modified???? just for reference.

Seriously, just use one of your extra wheel hex drive pins. They are SOLID and HARDENED. Two qualities the original roll pin didn't have. I actually put a very slight bend in mine when I installed it to make sure it didn't slide out.

big greg 11.08.2008 11:28 PM

or an allen wrench, that should do the trick, but seriously how are you getting back flips with the parachute of a body lol, when i drove one, the throttle/brake didnt do nothin in the air lol

rootar 11.08.2008 11:30 PM

should i just dab a little locktite in the hole and stick it in there and let it sit over night? or is it a press fit? and do i have to drill it out because my wheel drive pins look to big. but then agian im converting the balance plug on my 2s nue pack right now and ill start tearing the slash down in a little bit.

rootar 11.08.2008 11:33 PM

im running HUGE badlands tires and there isnt much left of my body... search my name and slash and you find a thread about the badlands and youll see how i dont have any body left,

and yes your right with a stock body or my proline hardcorr body and stock tires the brakes and throttle dont do didly squat in the air, it just goes how it wants to.
