MMM V3 and water
Hey, how much water can these take?
Just curious, because I haven't drowned it yet! Took some kids to the park to play with my Slash. Gave it a 1800KV Lehner Basic XXL and a 2S lipo. We went to a soaking wet skate park and bashed for two hours in wet grass, wet wood chips, and cold, wet, slick, hard concrete, all on a single charge. Still works... I'll try my 6S later on a track, and if that doesn't cook my MMM, I'll get back to work on making my slash a robot |
Wet grass is fine, I've done that myself. I would avoid puddles deeper than 1" or so- that nasty spray is laiden with mud and muck that will not do the esc or connections any good.

My input is...if it is really wet, I don't run...I would rather be safe than sorry. Just my opinion

i have run through deep puddles with my V1 and V2. Never seemed to bother them. make sure you blow them out with the air gun as soon as your finished.
Like they said puddles and wet grass and mud is fine just DONT submerge. |

I've run my MMM in snow and due to my laziness of not fully sealing the chassis a bunch of it collected between the motor bullets. All was fine and I ran in the snow again a few days later with more protection and the esc rotated degrees.

So whats the real anwser on this? i would love to cover the motor and esc and run in the snow but obviously something is gonna get wet eventually . So short of totall submersion is it ok ??? I wonder if water in the motor would make the esc go nuts trying to read the position?

i have run through puddles to the point it starts sputtering. i have one body that has a hole cut in the windshield and one that doesn't. i recommend using a hole when its warm outside and you need some cooling over the motor esc and batts. When its wet keep things from soaking the inside.
All that said i have sprayed off the ESC and motors many times after some very muddy runs on the track then cleaned it up immediately with the air gun and have had no troubles whatsoever. If you dont submerge and keep a body on the truck and you blow it out then finish with some wd-40 to drive out the remaining moisture things will be fine. |
Aside from water and contaminants from wrecking the motor bearings or rusting the motor shaft, I don't see why the motor would care if it got a little wet. The wires are electrically insulated up to the tip where you solder. Even without that, water has high enough resistance to not make it a factor.
However, the ESC is different. Even with the water-resistance coating, I'd avoid water. Despite water having high resistance, the low-level signals in the brain circuits may be affected and cause all sorts of havoc. If you don't care about the warranty, you could take the case off, make a new sealed case with just the wires and heatsink poking out. Then you can use silicone or shoe-goo to seal the edges if the wires and HS. |

Castle dips their circuit boards in a solution that makes them waterproof... er, sorry, water resistant (officially). It's those pesky fans that get in the way. It's the long term effects of water that'll hurt your truck. I've ran my v2 through about 3ft of snow, works great but it can increase the load on the truck so gear it way down. |
I wonder if just a simple top hat over the fan would do the trick.
Then it can still breathe buy water and snow won't enter From the top. |
