How big is your wire?

just a pic of the wire we are using on our current project in san francisco. its a 115kv (115,000 volts) underground transmission line. wieghs about 35 lbs. per foot and costs $1 M per reel (~1850ft per reel). center conductor is 1 million mcm compact annular stranded. it has a lead jacket and 4 fiber optic cables in it as well(outer layers).

Most of my wires are 12g, or 10g on the MMM esc. You win...

...jerk!:na:

How are they connected? you would need one hell of a soldering iron:lol:

slimthelineman 11.28.2008 04:48 PM

tried to solder it up to my mmm....... just wasnt working! lol

slimthelineman 11.28.2008 04:50 PM

we use cadmium welds to connect this wire, smaller cable uses 200-600 amp componets with pressed connections

Dang dude, and I thought that the 3000' of 500 MCM we needed recently at our plant was spendy. :mdr:

supralover72 11.28.2008 04:57 PM

Lol, I was hoping from the title that this thread was actually about wire. I guess size does matter lol

slimthelineman 11.28.2008 04:58 PM

yeah i think we used about 5000 ft of 500 mcm 2500 of 250 mcm (Cu) on just the ground grids in the two substations.

Is that why the ladies like you!

slimthelineman 11.28.2008 05:01 PM

it is about wire, just not the stuff that makes our toys go. instead it makes your life and everything connected to it go. ie anything that used ac current.

We use a similar size Cord for our power on cable for the airplanes in the factory. 440 I beleive it is. Of course, most of the size on ours is shielding since they are use above ground as an extension cord.

slimthelineman 11.28.2008 08:44 PM

you mean 480? that is a nasty voltage, any kind of fault and it sees it as load and dumps more amperage to the fault. i have seen a panel in a cinderblock wall that blew up on 480 and it melted the whole wall! you guys must be runnin some SERIOUS equip of that stuff. usually cnc or similar equip.

Andrew32 11.28.2008 10:17 PM

BL_RV0 11.28.2008 10:17 PM

Are you implying that he has more than 1 wire?
