XL vs L
 

Hello,

I've been brushless for 2 seasons (well really 1 1/2) and in that time I've use 9L and 10L motors. I know they make XL versions of these motors too. What does and XL do that a L doesn't? My Maxx with the 9L or 10L is about as fast and powerful as the tracks I race on can handle. Will an XL do the same job only more efficiently? Cooler? Heat is a big issue, my motors are super hot at the end of 5 mins. If an XL can get my temps down, that would justify a switch.

I tend to subscribe to the bigger is better theory but I wonder if some of you Brushless Veterans know the difference between the XL series and the L series...

the xl has more torque thus less effort to move the truck which will result in lower temps. i have heard of them running 105 after 20 minutes and the esc at about 95. the xl will allow you to gear higher with a lower kv rating and more windings. and yes, the xl will be more efficient than a L. i would assume you run on 12 or 14 cells? if so i would go for a 8xl or maybe a 9xl if you want good runtime and alot of power. remember, the more torque the higher you can gear and a xl will do just that, provide more torque.

Also, the longer can of the XL helps to dissapate heat better.

The "xl" can simply provide more power with cooler temps due to its abilty to dissipate the heat better and the additional torque provided by the longer rotor. You WILL notice cooler temps with a similar speed xl motor.

I think you should go with similar turn (maybe 1 turn lower) XL motor. You gear up to make the difference in rpm. So 8xl or 9xl.

how many cells? i would assume 12 or 14 since you run a 9l and 10l.

Thanks for the comments guys. I've been running 14 cells on the 9L & 10L va an 18.97KWF. I did just recently switch to LiPo, they are the 7.4v Packs so now I'm sending 14.8v of LiPo juice through. I actually felt that the LiPo had more go than my 14 cells did so which would you think - 8XL or 9XL...

Also - Mike C - do you run XL motors or L motors in your beast.

Mike runs 19 series in alot of his race trucks. That i know of any way. I have ran the 7xl and 9xl on the same schulze controller. You really have to watch the gearing on a 7xl with 16-18 cells on that controller for thrrmalling. I didn't have a problem on with the 9xl. I can not comment on the 8xl for have not tried it. I have ran a L motor in the same truck as a xl motor. The xl is just better to me. I ran a 9xl and a 14 L motor. both have simaliar kv and run time but the 9xl would run a little faster but cooler.
