hyperion duo
Do i need a power suply to run the duo in my house ? If so were do i get one?

That PS is good for 14v @ 23A, or 322w. Chargers being around 80% efficient will eat up some of that, but should be good unless you plan on charging high cells counts at high current.

So the max for the Duo is 180w per side, works out to 12.85 amps at 14v, is that right?
To use the full potential of the charger 25-30 amps is needed then....? |
Actually, if you wanted the full 180w+180w, you'd need 32A @ 14v (figuring 80% efficiency). But really, what batteries are you gonna charge to reach that level??

I have 2 2S FP 4900s and 2 2S MA 6000s Brian. The FP 4900 say they'll take a 2.5c max charge rate which works out to 12.25 amps, I don't think I'd usually charge much over 1.5c, but I only want to buy the PS once and be happy is all. I don't think I'd go over 1c on the Max(fill-in-your-own-insult) packs.
I saw recently a Pyramid 30 amp PS for $100, first thought I had was "they're still in business?" Sounds like a great deal, but knowing Pyramid's quality from car audio, I have to wonder if it's one dirty (like a cheapo 110v welder) P(o)S... What would be your pick in the over 25 amp category sir? |
BTW I stink at mah/time figuring, but how long would a 2S 4900 take to charge at 12 amps?

Thanks Brian. I'm gonna research more on hi amp PS's. I'll be buying the Duo from Mike in the next weeks, I am hung up on a PS tho. Don't really want to pay much over $400 for PS and Duo but my buddy's PolyCharge 4 ain't cuttin it with a 3 amp max lol. |
remember charging a lipo at more than 1c you will shorten the life of the battery, and dont feel you need to have the full 180 watts per side...130 watts will charge a 6s 5000 pack

Well, keep in mind that charging 4900mAh batteries at 12A is almost a 2.5C charge rate, which may not be the best idea depending on the particular battery. Plus, if the pack has any kind of imbalance, it would be really hard for any balancer to equalize the cells in that short of time, and you run the risk of one or more cells getting beyond 4.2v before the CC/CV threshold.
Generally, 1C works fine and runs a little over an hour to charge a fully depleted pack, so that's not bad really. You don't absolutely NEED a super high current PS. If you are just going to charge a 2s 4900mAh pack at 1C, you only need a PS capable of ~4A @ 14v (or ~4.5A @ 12v). If you want to charge two 2s 4900mAh packs at once at 1C, you need double that (~8A @ 14v or ~9A @ 12v). If you want to charge two 3s 4900mAh packs at once at 1C, you need 11A @ 14v or 13A @ 12v. As the pack capacity and/or cell count and/or charging C rate goes up, so does the power requirements. You could get by with a cheap 12v supply for now, but then upgrade later when you power requirements increase, but it tends to be more expensive in the long run... |
