E Revo Lipo Options Best Bang for the Buck

Hi Guys,

I've been running some 5000mah 20C Lipos for about a year now. They still perform well, but like we do with everything, I'm looking for more and better.

The E Revo Compartment is limited on space, but just how much punch can we put in there?

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...atterysize.jpg

I'm looking for Lipo options that are the highest capacity, highest "C" rating, at the best "Cake and eat it too" price.

Please post your suggestions we can all compare. 5S and 6S options are VERY welcome too.

Here's one that I've been looking at:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...0C_Lipoly_Pack

A Pair of these in Parallel will yield:

7000mah at 4S
210 amps continous
280 amps Burst

5s 8000mah setup for $35....

Wasn't Mike supposed to have some RCM branded lipo's available?

EDIT:

I didn't see they were 4s in parallel, so you are right

zippy 4s 3500mAh 30/40C (14.8v)

Wired in series would be 29.6V/3500mAh 105/140
Wired in parallel would be 14.8V/7000mAh , so 7000 x 30/40 = 210/280A

That's right? so a nice option here, for high discharge rate

Too bad Mike's 2500 cells don't come in 3s2p packs...

I've been looking at those myself. They are 10C cells continous, 15C Burst.

8000mah = 80 amps continous, 120 amps Burst.

Not Bad at all for the price........But.....

I think alot of the upper end Motors geared aggressively would puff those.

With conservative gearing and some punch control enabled to help tame those amperage spikes, they could be a good setup.

I like the 5S 8000mah setup that actually fits the battery compartments.

It's easier to gear conservatively and control amperage with 5S than is 4S IMO.

I have ran 10C cells before. They don't deliver the amps that higher C ratings do, but with 8000mah, 80 amps isn't bad.

This reminds me of the good reviews the True RC 8000mah 4S setups were getting.

I really should invest in a data logger and do some testing.

I seen your testing and posted to your thread with some ideas. Check it out.

Can Mike get the 3S and 4S packs in the 2500 cells?

If a 5S 2500mah pack would fit on each side of the E Revo, that would be VERY nice!

What is the size of a single 2500 cell? Should be easy to figure.

hoovhartid 12.11.2008 08:16 PM

If he is getting them where I think he gets them from,.....
...then they make a 4s 4500mah 25c battery with the dimensions 166X45X30.

He could probably order them.... but I'm not sure if I have the right place....

I dont want to give out too much info, because I dont want to undercut Mike...

Hey Hoov,

I believe we all support Mike here. I appreciate the fact that he has given me, and all of us RC addicts a place to talk about our setups, compare and support each other. That's what this thread is about.

This Thread is about experience with different Lipo setups and simply what fits this thing. LOL

I wish these Battery Compartments were open and could fit 10000mah 12S setups, but they're not.

@Brian. I believe these are the cells you've been working on testing and referred to.

http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...p4843128sp255s

If they hold that kind of voltage under a load. Two of these in Parallel would make a GREAT 5S 5000mah setup.

125 amps continous
250 amps Burst.

5S that holds voltage better under a load would outrun a 6S setup made of cheaper cells that allow voltage to drop under a load.

In looking through the RC Monster store, Those Hyperion cells caught my eye too. I don't see the pack dimensions though. Anyone have any experience with those?

Hyperion has a reputation for producing GREAT quality.

I ordered a pair of those to find out if they are worth it. The shipping was fast as it only took a week to get them from Hong Kong. Here's a little info about them for starters. First a pic of the pair.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos1.jpg

Weight = 418.5 grams each, the dimensions stated on ebay were 145X48X30, they are more like 146X48X30.7. It's going to be a tight squeeze putting them in the ERevo. The positive and negative leads are rather short IMHO, only 7.4 cm or a little less than 3 inches. They are obviously made entirely by hand and wrapped in a sticky foam, like servo tape, with a layer of fiber reinforced transparent tape all around. There's a piece of sticky black cardboard at each end and two pieces of transparent fiber reinforced tape at either end on top of the cardboard to finish it off. The sides of the cells are exposed, there's nothing covering their aluminum envelope. Don't like that at all.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos2.jpg

It was my intention to offer these lipos some better protection by shrink wrapping them. So I gently peeled the label and put it aside, then I peeled the pieces of fiber reinforced tape at either end. A thin layer of the protective sticky cardboard underneath will come with it but I'm not worried about that. Plenty of cardboard left.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos3.jpg

Here's why I'm not worried, I replaced that tape I peeled off by a piece of Gorilla Tape. If you don't know about this stuff, it's just the stickiest, toughest duct tape you can find just about anywhere.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos4.jpg

Then I take a piece of 3 and 5/16 inch wide black shrink wrap I got at the LHS that is 1/2 inch longer than the lipo. I slide and center the lipo in it and using a heat gun, I shrink it. This stuff can be nasty and if you apply just a little too much heat in one spot, it will rip and form a big gapping hole. Keep the gun moving all the time. I replaced the label where it should be and this is the result.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos5.jpg

I think it looks a bit more factory made and the batt is much more protected.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...bay_lipos6.jpg

Now does anyone know how I can test these lipos without actually running them in the truck? I pre ordered the BL ERevo but it looks like the release date has been set back to mid February.

How much are they? These ebay lipos were like $45 CDN total for the pair, plus a couple bucks for the Dean's plugs and the shrink wrap. That's why I want to try them out in parallel to see if they're worth it.

E-Revonut 01.02.2009 06:43 PM

I paid $95 for 3s and 65 for 2s. Although more expensive I'm sure they will provide more punch, stay cooler, and have a longer life span. They are 25/50C rated. I don't think these are in stock anymore because they have a new line of Lipos that accep up to a 5c charge rate. They cost a little more but trust me you won't be disappointed with these Lipos

mistercrash 01.02.2009 07:23 PM

Thanks for the info, I will surely keep those in mind if these ebay cheapos puff. I usualy get the best stuff I can afford but every once in a while, I get caught buying something because it is so cheap :mdr: If they puff, it won't be a big loss. If they hold up than I'll be laughing. Thanks again.
