Whats the best Lipo/regulator combo to use for receiver/servos?
 

This is for my Nitro Revo. :na:

I want to run a Lipo rx pack. I actually have a 7.4 2s 1600 that will fit but I am reading that I may be better of with a 3s. My only concern is that with 3s if the reg goes, so goes my rx and servo's. But I am open to opinions, hence my post!


Whats the best regulator/lipo combo for this application?

Yeah, 3s 1600mAh will give you about 30% more runtime than 2s 1600mAh, but as you say, if the regulator goes poof, so does your equipment. So, I'd go with the 2s setup personally.

I know you hate to reccomend a specific product, but if that one does not work well is there another that might? I am not the most electron savy guy around, you know?

Just use any old bec you have laying around.

My favorites are (in no particular order): Western Robotics Hercules BECs (several to choose from), Koolflight UBEC, and any of the DimensionEngineering BECs.

The cheapie BECs are cheap for a reason. They tend to be "noisy" which can be a problem for certain receivers. Despite the fact they use the same switching IC as the better makers (listed above), the choice in support components can make or break a design. I've had a cheapie one that tested fine, but would cause my spektrum rx to "reboot" on occasion.

The Castle BEC looks good on paper and has some neat features, but I found that one to be a tad noisy. And there have been several reports that they fail by sending full battery voltage to servos/rx. Of course, ANY BEC can do this, but seems to happen more on the CC ones. Could be just that there are more in use so it stands to reason there will be more failures, but I am hesitant to blow ~$200 in servos/receivers to find out.

I use Protek linear BEC in my nitro cars. No issues with heat in 30min mains and no noise. Stay with 2S. 2S 2000mah is enough for more than hour with 2 JR9100 servos.

Or you can get JR9100HV servos and run without UBEC if you have receiver that can hadle the voltage like spektrum.

I have that and it worked well for me. I have another set(brand new) if you're interested.

I have been doing research (lurking in the heli forums..lol) and its very popular with them to use 2s lipo packs for thier Rx's . I believe the JR and Spektrum Rx's can take up to 9v

I'd am leaning towards the sport BEC I linked but 2 things concern me.

Its ratings start at 9v, and I've decided to use 2s
Its only rated to 3.5 amps.

I am not sure how much my 2 servos's draw, but I have one high torque digital, and one high speed analog.

Honestly the castle BEC has everything I am looking for but the durabilty scares me. I saw more than a few stop working where I race.

Wallot- I would love to get the HV servo's but $200x4 is $800, and I've already got $500 in servo's that I would have to sell for a song and a dance

E-Revonut- lol, not many laying around. I've got 4 nitro motors though!

Any opinions on the voltage, and draw? thanks!

any BEC can fail and fry your electronics, the only totally safe method is to use a Rx battery pack
