It's Lunacy!

So me and brushlessboy gotta build an "r/c" so to speak, much bigger than anything here. were part of first robotics(team 87) and today they just announced the new game we have to build a robot for! the game is called Lunacy. A video showing how to play can be found here: http://topweb.arc.nasa.gov/first/200.../LunacyLrg.mov

and the official rulebook can be found here: http://usfirst.org/community/frc/content.aspx?id=452

any comments/ideas?

You have no idea how jealous I am. I would love to have a chance to do that. You guys should have fun with that. Good luck.

I decided to drop out of our robotics class. This year was the first year for our school. It just doesnt interest me...

Hey, I just got back from that meeting! We're team 1996, so fairly new to it. Last year, we did pretty good at the Denver final, but I wasn't on the team. This year I am though. Can't tell you what we're building, though, top secret:mdr:! This is going to be a very interesting game, I think, though some of the people on our Robotics Team are really quite useless:no:.

I tried the movie and it didn't work. It just gave me a blank screen with the blue quicktime symbol in the middle. I changed the end of the address from .mov to .mp4 and then a big fat question mark showed up on top of the quick time symbol.

It's probably just my internet browser.

Yeah... this game is Odd to me... I still like the fact that neu 22xx motors have the exact same shafts and bolt patterns as the motors we use for the bot.... would be an easy swap..

Metallover 01.03.2009 07:22 PM

Found it on youtube.... Looks SWEET! Make your robot frickin fast. I never read the rules, bt that would be sweet if you found a way to knock balls out of other peoples baskets.

It's in the rules that you DON'T get a penalty for ramming:mdr:! Too bad you have to use their stupid electronics -.- And you have to use the dumb lead-acid battery too! No lipo or li-ion:no:. Lol the control system we're using this year is really crazy! It's literally a wireless N router broadcasting a network to an adapter of some sort that has inputs and outputs. I hope we can keep the router when we're done with the competitions:lol:!

Brijar!!!

Hmmm... The meeting was today. Didnt bother to go. I just dont think its for me.

sweet to see some FRC guys here. Was a member of 1002 in HS, co founder and mentor of 1848. and confounding mentor of 2415

Theres alot of things im going to be calling jeremy (one of the members of GDC) about this game. FAR better than last years IMHO!

in ALL HONESTY...their electronics are FAR superior to anything in RC...we using the same stuff taht we use in the DARPA challenges for autonomous cars!

Head mentor for team 1404 in Toronto here =) I'm also a coordinating member of an organization at the University of Toronto that connects students and faculty members to local FIRST teams. Its a great competition, and I'm really with what Dean says when he wants to give every student the opportunity to participate if they want to. I didn't have the chance to when I went through high school. Instead I did my best and participated in other local competitions that were on a much smaller scale.

Anyway, on topic, I'm not so much a fan of this year's game. I really liked the game two years ago (Rack N Roll) and I feel even last year's game had more opportunity for an exceptional design. I see most of the impact for many matches is going to be from the human players, and I really believe that that is a step backwards. On the flip side, the core values they're trying to put into the games this year are great. I find that there is a lot less opportunity this year to engineer an entirely custom robot, which will hopefully level the playing field for teams that are not as well funded or "supported" by mentors (it always bugs me at the competition when I see two adults working on the robot and 25 kids standing around watching them).

I like that they have raised the bar and made the electronics system a lot more complicated. Its a shame, but the electronics in the robots in my University's undergraduate robotics group are not nearly as advanced as the system they've given the FIRST teams. However, it is a great step in the right direction and will push the envelope down the line, and the students that work with these electronics will want to use more cutting edge technology in their future projects.

Besides the electronics system weighing like 30 lbs, the only real dissapointments I have are that we are not brushless yet and we can't use lipos... although if we had the cash we'd outfit it with some cool r/c stuff... just think... 120lb robot, 4 neu 2200 series/MMM with lipo power!

I used to be on team 1660. Good luck with your builds this year guys.
