New motor adivse
I have a project that I'm working on and would like some advice on a motor for it. It is a 15lb monster truck that has a 1st generation Emaxx tranny. This is to be a basher not racing or top speed runner, so 40 mph is fine. I have a 52t spur and tons of 5mm pinions so a 5mm shaft is prefered. I'm not sure if the Maxx tranny and motor plate will limit me or not. I was thinking 1521, but will that diameter fit my Maxx motor plate? Will the motor mounting holes lineup? Should I keep waiting for the Medusa 80mm motor? Any suggestions welcome.

If running the gen1 maxx mount plate, you'll probably want to get the smooth finned Neu or grind down part of the fins of the finned Neu to have enough clearance. Or, just get a Medusa. I assume you have the steel idler in the tranny? If not, you're gonna need it.
If you're only looking for 35-40mph top speed, the 1515 is good. A 1521 would allow you to gear higher if you wanted higher speeds. |
I would think that if you're trying to throw around 15#, an 80mm would be what you want, but that's just me.

I'm using the MMM so 6s in an option, but in the name of keeping the weight down I would prefer 4s. My trans is a Gmaxx single speed with steel idlers and the other gear is aluminum.

Nothing that hasn't already been said but a 70mm Medisa shoud do the trick if you step up to 5-6s, a 1515 will also do just fine.

i have run 4s in my 9 lb truggies and it works but things are much better on 5s now. so i would at least go 5s in your setup. also, a 1515 would handle the job but i think a 1521 would be more ideally suited. it will fit just fine. it is the same width as 1515 only about a 1/2' longer. also the mounting screw holes are standard as on all electric motors. if you search google you can find sites to buy 1521 Neus. lots of times you can find used ones in different forums too. Lutach got a 1521 last week for $70. i was pissed. he beat me to it by like 3 days. anyway, if you have trouble finding any pm me and i can give you some links that i have. oh, check the boat rc scene. 1521 Neus are pretty much standard equipment on rc racing boats. so often you find used ones for sale on the boat forums. good luck. oh, and i would highly recommmend the Neu over the Medusa. I havent tried the Medusa but i can only go off what i hear from those who have both. Medusa's are good motors it sounds like but the Neus just out perform everything else out there.
check out this link of a (i estimate about 10-11 lb) muggy on a 1521. does standing back flips.:mdr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo7GdkNpKAY |
For a heavy truck like that a 1521 will be mandatory, or a 80mm medusa as a budget motor. 6s is a good idea, as is the 1500-1600kv range on the motor. I would not gear for much more than 40mph. And a flm al half case would be a good mod to go with that gmaxx single speed. Those motors are heavy, a thicker motor mount will be a good idea too. IIRC a finned neu with a 52t mod1 spur will allow a 16t pinion before you have contact with the tranny case.

Here is what my 1521/1Y on 6S does:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFoYkI_-v_M Go to 2:36. My truggy weighs around 13lbs maybe more with that set up. I've switched to 5S2P and it weighs even more, but I get longer run times and the power loss isn't that much lol. |
Thanks everyone for your input. My original ideal was to go with 1900-2200 KV motor on 4s,but now I will backup on my plans and go with the lower KV (1500-1600) motor on 6s, and maybe extend the life of my setup. Thanks again.
