the advantage to the RC8T tray is the size. it is the perfect size for many popular packs on the market. it fits just about all Polyquest, Enerland, and NeuEnergy packs perfectly.
as far as placing the pack on its side as you mention.....well it depends on which side you mean. ideally you want a tray that will fit your pack so that the widest side sits against the chassis. this will keep your center of gravity lower. having the short side against the chassis means your pack is sitting higher out of the tray and making your CG higher which affects your handling.
i actually love the RCM RC8T tray. i have bought about 5 of them and have converted all my kits to accept this tray. i have a Mugen MBX5T where i have milled out the chassis slightly so the tray fits down inside the chassis for even lower CG. plus the trays are milled and i think the material is acetyl which is super strong. correct me if i am wrong Mike.
