Speed Buggy

I got to looking around and realized I almost had enough parts to get my old Prospec rolling again.

I've got my brushless MBX-6 and MBX-5T for offroad, so I decided to make a street machine out of it.

I had a Neu 1512/1.5/D/F laying around so I took the RCPD kit out of my truggy and ordered another MMM and one of Mikes motor mounts and battery trays to put back in the truggy.

I got these Losi street tires. Their a little short (only 3.75 inch) but I hope to get some good speed runs out of them. I also got a JR z9100t for steering, a Futaba receiver and a new body.

The only thing I'm waiting for is the MMM.

I'm going to try and gear it up for some speed runs.

I hope to break 70 mph or so. With a 16t pinion I should be in the ballpark at least. :mdr:

Any suggestions for some "go fast" tire and wheel combos?

bdebde 01.26.2009 04:21 PM

I would say stay away from the road rages, they balloon like crazy. I have tried the ofna belted tires which work pretty good, same tires available unbelted as well. Also 1/8th foams may be good for high speed, I haven't tried those yet.

I have 3 sets of road tires, planther slicks (super light weight, high traction), ofna treaded (short, low profile), hotlaps autocross (larger dia, heavy).

I haven't tested the panther slicks for speed runs yet. I will once i get my castle 2650 combo in. They do look pretty promising however, considering the fact that they make my hv7.5 seem like it has more punch.

The ofna tread tires make the top end seem very flat because they do not balloon at all.

The hotlaps seem to have a nice feel. They do balloon, but i haven't noticed an increase in motor temps verses other tires, even with the novak hv4.5.

I'll be able to test ampdraw/rpm with my eagletree for all these tires once i get the chance.

Yeah, I figured the road rages in some of the pics would not make the cut.

The Losi tires that I have may do ok. They are solid and wont balloon.

I saw some GRP street tires before but CRC didn't have any in stock.

What kind of speeds are you guys getting out of your cars?

I just looked them up and I already have a set of the hotlaps autocross tires.

They do alright but they do balloon.

I will be watching this thread.

The Losi's are the GRP's. Losi is importing them now exclusively. They will be the only tire you need for your project. I have had them over 100mph.

Ipanema slicks are belted, and they come pre-glued if you are as glueing inept as I am. I havent run them yet to see how good they are, but they have a good rep on a 1:8 car racer forum.

What size Medusa? I've got a Hyper 7 TQ that I run onroad with those autocross tires and a 70mm 2000KV Medusa. Currently only geared for 50 MPH but it really goes and has plenty of room to be geared higher. The thing I've noticed about these tires is they plow like mad, I can't turn at all until I get down to 25 MPH or so.

Edumakated 02.06.2009 01:29 PM

I got my rc8 up to 70mph with the 1.5d on 5s moderately geared. I think you could actually break 80mph though if you get the setup (lowered, shocks, springs, etc) of the car right. I never even got to full throttle. Mine was wheeling all over the place. The bigger issue is keeping the tires on the rims. I could only make about 3 passes before the tires start blowing off the rims.

I used the tires you have in your picture and they held up pretty well after I reinforced the glue. Foams would probably work best.
