Question for Tekno guys re: Medusa Motor.
 

I just got my Medusa 36/50/1600 and am using it on my Kyosho MP777 buggy on 6s. While testing everything tonight with the car on the stand with no wheels, I noticed after less than a minute with a temp gun on it I got a puff a smoke from the motor. I had my temp gun on it the whole time and the max temps I saw was 160. I did not even use full throttle.

After I shut everything down and let things cool, the motor seems to turn fine but my temps shoot up pretty fast. I don't want to blow this thing up. Did I get the wrong motor for 6S? Is it normal for this motor to need a break-in? I am used to Neu motors so this is my first attempt at using a Medusa. Thanks for the input if any guys.

Brushless motors do not need a break in.

The fact that you ran the motor without any resistance for a minute means you might have caused this.

The fact that the temp went up to 160 in that small amount of time leads me to beleive this.

Never run the motor (unless for a few seconds to test out the tire rotation) without it being on the ground, tires and all.

These motors are designed to be running with resistance ALWAYS. Even the manufacturers of the motors will tell you this.

If you previously got away with these same procedures using the Neu, it was just lucky.

Besides NiTrO... Break-in is just for brushed motors. This is to seat the brushes properly, but since we are running brushless motors now, you must skip this step.

Your right, I did exactly what you stated. I ran without tires, just spinning the axles. So now I know thats a no-no! Now that I know not to do that, did I ruin the motor by doing that for that short amount of time? Is it still safe to use or did I damage it? Like I said, the motor still seems to work strong, but temps up quick (but now I know why it temps up quick so I won't run it without resistance anymore). Thanks.

It might be OK, but as you said, it heats up quickly.

If that isn't a problem for you, than it should be ok.

Besides that, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up a new motor as soon as you can. Try a Medusa for a great motor at a great price.

could have damaged some coils and have an internal short causing the quick warm up. Medusas are great motors, I have a 36-50-4800 in my CRT.5 and it has never seen anything above 130*

Called Medusa up this morning and spoke with a tech. He said the motor should not have the issues I stated above. Told me to send it in for service. I am sure everything will be fine. BTW, what length Medusa should be run on a buggy and truggy. I bought a 50 for my buggy but the tech stated I should have gone with the 60.

The 50mm should be fine as long as the buggy is light and you are not gearing over 40mph.
