help with engine tuneing
this is my first nitro truck, LST let it idle through first tank of fuel and second tank lots of smoke and spiting fuelout of muffler when reved at half throttle would not move .Temperature outside was 36,engine did not go above 130.was able to drive off about 30 feet finally when almost empty . engine was leaning out any suggestions? Thanks

hmmm - i'm definately no nitro king -lol- But i can throw a couple tips at ya i guess till someone else pops along -lol-
When you gave it throttle - was the engine 'bogging' down really bad and lacking power? Does it just stay bogged down and then stall, or does it clear the fuel mixture out and start to run a bit? If it bogs and stalls - there'es too much fuel mixture passing through which bogs dow the engine, cause it cant burn all the fuel - lean out the low speed needle for that... btw - with the 3 tuning needles - are you up to scratch with them? Idle/High Speed/Low Speed needles/screws? You wanna just run up and down a 20meter or so straight then u-turn and put along the way back - do that for the first 6-8 tanks i think.....try not going over ½ throttle untill about thr 4th-5th tank :) Another suggestion is to seal up that poverty pack primer on the fuel tank - seal it up - and when you need to prime the engine with fuel - just hold ur finger over the exhaust tip and crank the rotor start for a sec - watch the fuel pass along the fuel tube and into the engine :) Temps are good around 130-180 max i think for the mach 26.... oh yeah - the engine will automatically lean itself out when the fuel tank gets low, cause the fuel isn't there for the engine to pick it up ;) |
engine bogs down and dies when throtle is applied, if throtle is applied very slowly it reves up and has no power
|
yeah - lean out the Low Speed needle :) I think leaning out is closing it off - clockwise...
How does it idle? Like - will it sit there at idle without stalling? (this is all assuming you haven't touched the high speed needle yet, and the needles are all at stock settings :) ) and also - whenever you make ANY changes to ANY of the needles - you need to make them in tiny 1/8 of a turn excrements - then run it for a minute or two to see how the change went - always better to have not enough than too much :) |
you almost definately need to lean out the low speed. you might want to check the plug also. on breakin you might go through a couple.
|
yep its to rich, you need to lean out your lsn a little so it keeps running. dont lean it out to much. and like dan said lean it out clockwise, 1/8 of a turn at a time.
|
you broke it in right?
|
on 9th tank of fuel, engine is tuned to run about 160 degrees how much longer should I wait to go full throtle? Haven"t gone pass half throtle yet. Thanks
|
you should do short 3 second bursts. go wot for 2-3 seconds, then take your finger off the throttle then do it again. do that for a tank. Did the engine come with break in steps?
|
you can go ahead and start leaning it out now. i would go about 1/8 a turn per tank until its correct.

You should be pretty close to go by now -- I'd do at leat one tank as Basketti describes and then go for it. 9 tanks sould be plenty.
What worked for me, on a different motor though, was to set lsn so the motor would start up easily and then adjust idle so it stays running. Then if it bogs down when throttle is applied, adjust hsn leaner by 1/8 turns until it stops bogging. Then check temps every few minutes to make sure it doesn't get much over 250. Keep leaning it slightly until it reaches 250 or so, and if it gets hotter richen it back up. A new glo plug might be in order now after so many break in tanks, it might help make final tuning easier. Also, are you running 20% or 30%? I've heard 20% is easier to tune with for a beginner, so that's what I went with. Hope you get running full speed soon, that looks like a fun truck!!:D |
