Need a motor

I just got back from melting my 13XL Feigao in the Muggy. :oh: MMM was barely warm, Zippy 5s was still cool but the motor smelled like melted resin and was too hot to touch.

I think I need a low Kv 1515 or something similar. If anyone has something suitable please pm me with details. Thanks, Evan

How long did the 13xl hold up for you?

Feigao durabilty

It had about 5 packs total on it. Most of it was on the track last season, no real high RPM's. This time it was an open area and it saw a couple of WOT runs but only for a couple seconds max (way too fast to control) I was thinking I was really happy with it until it let go. Now the shaft spins totally free and there's fine magnetic dust coming out from behind the bearings.

When I recharged the pack (Zippy 5000 5s) it took 2650mah.

I have a 600xl rewound with neu windings FS, PM me.
PS it is 1680kv

1515 2.5d would prolly do pretty well. I'm sure others will chime in though

you could go with a 1600-2000kv motor, either Neu or Medusa
Medusa-70mm
Neu - 2d, 2.5d, 1.5y

or if you are feeling randy a 1521/1y (1500kv) you would be able to gear up more with this motor but you will need to measure it will be a little longer than a 1515 can

That's kinda odd that the 13XL melted like that. Not being the most efficient motors, I can maybe see something like that happening after an hour of constant use. I imagine you didn't just put pack after pack in it. But running ~20 minutes and letting cool for ~20-30 min should allow it to run forever.

That's kinda what I was thinking also Brian.

I have a 14xl that I've ran a few times and it performed like a champ.

The first xl feigao motor that I ran and it really surprised me.

Just my luck

Maybe it was just a fluke. It was running great until it stopped, no gradual slowdown or anything. Went from screaming along to twitching in about three seconds. The endbells are pressed in this one but I'll drill one out to see what happened.

I'm almost finished installing a 600XL that I had from a previous project. Looking forward to a test drive tomorrow & I'll post the comparison review.

If the feigao is a smooth can you can remove the rear endbell by just taping the shaft on a block of wood and it will pop the rear endbell off.

I run a 14xl on 8s lipo and it has great temps, 160 max after a 45min run. I think the cheaper motors just cannot handle the current a low wind can pull, they just seem less effecient that a high wind on more voltage.

if your going for a nue as a replacement definetly go for the 1515 2.5d its the PERFECT motor on 5s

ive ran my pack after pack tons of times at the track in my buggy and truggy and temps have never broken 150 even in july after a 30 minute a-main.

I agree that is the perfect motor on 5s! I run it in my E-REVO and have great temps as well. It can handle 6s but it's crazy and it'll even pull decent gearing on 4s.

Not much to see

That's what I like about this forum, saved me time again. I opened it up and there's surprisingly little to see. Looks like the coating on the windings heated up and then sort of powdered. No burns, contact marks or visible melting though.

Confused?

So I just ran my 600XL. Worked well, stayed cool. Not the same punch as the Feigao motor, not too surprising but what did surprise me was the top speed. It was noticeably slower. I thought that with a higher Kv motor and everything else the same I would get more top end.

Is there anything I should do with my motor settings on the MMM for the 600XL?

lincpimp 02.16.2009 12:32 PM

If it is running cool, raise the timing and see what happens...
