Does anyone here have a Baja 5T?

Just wondering the exact wheelbase of the stock 5t body....

Or if someone here has purchased the Proline 5b to 5t conversion body, a wheelbase on that would be good too!

Thanks guys!

Did you manage to pick up a 1/5?

Nah, making a stretched savvy... Track width is about right for the 5t body, but I want to make sure that I am making it with the correct wheelbase...

Damn you got my hopes up. Im really looking forward to seeing a sweet 1/5 conversion.

I have a white one and a black one. Black one will be brushless very soon.
What else do you need besides wheelbase?

I have all the math data on the savage XL frame. If there were enough people interested I could run a couple of sets off the water jet machine and we could get a head start on the HPI model. We would just need to agree on were/what tranny we wanted to use. Also the truck body shown does not have the same body mounts as my 5T. I'm not sure why. I have some 40 series tires if you guys are intersted in seeing a mock up of the body on some rims and tires.

Body width at the wheel wells would be nice, as well as the exact wheelbase.

As for the ext chassis, I would like to use the stock tranny, and move it forward so that a std heavy duty savage x wheel driveshaft could be used as the rear center driveshaft. This would create enough room to mount the motor behind the tranny, on the stock nitro mount plate. The stock lenght is just about enough for an xl length motor (70mm or so) and i would like the option to run a 1527 motor. Even with the longer rear center driveshaft the area in front of the tranny would be plenty to mount the battery, inside the tvps.

Body mounts are not really a big deal, as i can make my own.

....and the answer is 21.25 inches for the wheelbase.

pm me your email and I can send you some fresh pics of my 5T with different tires under it.

body width at the front wheels is 15.25 inches, body width at the rear wheels is 15.75 inches.
Are the XL wheel drive shafts the same length as the X sheel drive shafts? All I currently have is the XL drive train. The Xl comes with a decent length rear drive shaft stock (I have a 4s pack behind the tranny with room to spare).

Thanks for the measurements!

I will have to look at the specs of the xl versus the x. Can you measure the distance from the spur to the rear shock tower on the xl? It may work if it is a bit longer than the x model. I will have to eyeball the manuals and see.

It would be nice just to extend the xl tvp in the center ahead of the tranny. That is what HPI has done (that is what I read anyway...) and it looks to have quite a bit of room in the front. I would not use the servo/rx box, and would mount the steering servo similar to the flm tranny forward mount, just with 2 cross braces instead of one (too flexible with just one).

Hey Tim, had a look at the manuals, and the XL rear center shaft is 142mm long, while the X rear center is 84mm long. The wheels shafts for both are 123mm long, but the XL is 1mm thick vs 9mm thick on the X. So the rear driveshaft is around 2.2" longer on the XL. According to the Savage 5t info they added 2.2" to the length of the XL to get the correct wheelbase for the Baja 5t body. Since the front driveshaft on the xl is 78mm long, going to a XL rear center shaft would give the required 2.2" of addl wheelbase. So it appears that the Savage 5t has 2 142mm long shafts (hpi p/n 86054) as center driveshafts, and the tranny must be in the center of the chassis.

Wheelbase on the XL is listed as 395mm, so adding 2.2" to that would be 55.8mm + 395 = 450.8. That is a bit off the 562mm listed on the Savage 5t specs.

Going with your Baja 5t measurements of 21.25" or 540mm, something is a bit screwy with the description of the Savage 5t's extra length. To get an Xl up to 5t body size it would take 145mm extra, or 5.6".... All i can say is that front dogbone it lllloooonnnggg...

I will do more thinking and figure something out!

So the Xl tranny placement will be fine for me, I am wondering how much space will be left in front of the tranny? Since the XL uses the same front center shaft as the X, I should be able to see the difference with some quick measurements.

7.23 appears to be the distance from spur to shock tower.
thats a 4s 8400 maxamp lipo hiding inside the TVP plates.

I just measured my XL wheelbase, I'm coming up with 16.00 or 406mm. Thats about 10mm different then what HPI states. No sure why that is.
I currently have the flux tranny waiting to be installed and I already did the Cen Gen diff conversion. I have one piece Ti rear hubs on order (my one piece Intgey hubs bent a hinge pin plus I dont really like Intgey as a company). So I think I ready, I would stick with my current Losi Bolt-on tires, because they are just a fuzz taller then 40 series and I think they are great. I'm currently running the big Hitec servo too.
Any body want to buy my extra gas power 5T? lol

Interesting pic Tim, thanks!

So I scratched my head a bit, and came up with the front driveshaft on the savage 5t must be somewhere near 220mm long. Got that from the 5.6" measurement that would be needed to get the XL chassis up to the 5t bodies wheelbase and added it to the 78mm XL front dogbone....

8.6" long front driveshaft is quite a length... Not sure what the flm tranny forward rear driveshaft length is, but i cannot see it being that long...

Leaves plenty of room for batteries up front, even after you figure maybe 2" for the servo mount.

However, looking at you pic of the xl with the lipos behind the tranny I think I would prefer to use the slightly shorter wheel driveshaft (hpi p/n 86134 123mm) as the rear center driveshaft. That would move the tranny back about 1" compared to the XL, and give a bit more flexibility in the tranny mount area. It will also add almost an 1" to the front driveshaft, which could really do with a carrier bearing or something like that, considering its length.

If I make a carrier bearing I could use a pair of the 84mm driveshafts (hpi p/n 86056) which are the stock X rear center shafts. The carrier bearing assy could be whtever length I want, with a dogbone cup on each end, and be supported with a pair of cutom crossbraces with bearings... I think this is preferable to the one piece front shaft, as it will have to be quite thick to handle the loading along its lenght. And I think the carrier bearing assy will be easier to make and I like the idea of off the shelf shafts, as they tend to be the weak/wear point anyways...
