Baja 5b Tuning
How hard is the 5b to tune compared to a nitro?, any experience is helpful in deciding if i really want one.
|
Insanely easy to tune compared to nitro's. Depending on were you live you will have to tune it maybe once a month. Performance almost never fluxuates so tuning is very minimal.

I live in Missippi

Ya that climate is humid IFRC. You will rarely have to tune it.

I've never moved mine off of the stock tune, and feel no need to do so. If you have a gas weedwhacker, I bet you never have to tune that...the baja engine is essentially the same thing.

I've seen these engines fire on the first pull, is that the way it usually is? Also is it necessery to choke it and prime it every time?

I have one of the king motor baja 5b knockoffs, so you can take this however you want. There is no comparison between it and nitro. I have not touched a screw on the carb at all. I have 2 gallons on it, if it has set for a week or so, you may prime it a few times, but usually I put full choke, pull once maybe twice, and you will hear it hit, then open the choke, and 8 times out of 10 it will start 1st pull. If you have been playing with at all that day it will start first pull. It was boggey down low when I first got it, put a pipe on it and it took all that out. It may have more in it, but I really havn't felt the need to mess with it any more.

Yes, if you prime it a few times, choke it pull start it until it turns over for a seconds or two and then shuts off. Then you will need to turn off clutch and pull start it and your set. I never had to pull more than 3 times. The general rule of thumb for small 2-stroke engines is if it doesnt turn over by the 3rd pull its not tuned properly.

Just to confirm, my starting experience is the same. Prime, choke, pull, pull, flip off choke, pull, and zoooooom.

That video is great. I've got a Baja and I love it. The stock exhaust on the RTRs is quiet but restricts the performance. I got a Mielke side pipe for $90 used and it really makes a big difference and is still pretty quiet. Very easy to tune and rarely ever needs tuned, runs on gas which is a ton cheaper than nitro, runs for up to 45 minutes per tank, run time only restricted by your receiver battery.

I have never moved the needle on my gas cars 23cc I think, just adjusted the idle till it sounded bad ass and left it for 6 years, fires 3rd pull when warm everytime. Provided you are using really good gas and synthetic oil already, you can tune it a bit running it leaner or richer
