MMM ESC and Novak 6.5HV Motor

Quick question. Do you all think it is possible to us a MMM with a 6.5HV motor.

Buddy has one and is giving me a good deal on it. And no I dont have the MMM combo just the ESC.

It has a small rotor so watch temps but the mmm should drive it ok...

ambryatim 04.02.2009 11:02 AM

It is actually the new version, so does it still have a small rotor???

The MMM should run it fine. However, just be aware that the HV motors are internally 380XL motors and therefore run at very high RPMs, so gear accordingly. You'll be using pinions 2/3 the size that you would with most other motors.

Also, make sure the ESC has firmware v1.20 or higher.

It has v1.20 V3 MMM. And I think on the gearing I will have to go with 15/68 on an EMAXX. If I remember the 6.5HV is rated at 3400kv.

Sounds about right, the MMM will run the hv motor just fine. I would try your gearing and see how the temps are. As long as you do not try to run heavy/large wheels and tires you should be fine. If your emaxx has alot of al parts, or you run heavy batteries you may have issues, just keep an eye on temps...

Uh.....I have Moabs but I might need to get some Dirt Hawgs or Axial Terr-izers.

Dang, well I might have to go with something different.

Best bet is to go with a different motor, will save u in the long run and be more reliable.

Medusa 70mm motor. Under 150 shipped, not much else that thrify that is worth wasting your money on.

BrianG 04.02.2009 02:57 PM

A Medusa 36-70 or 36-80 would be about the cheapest, reliable, and efficient large motor I can think of...

Edit: Dang, linc beat me to it. At least you have two answers posted seperately that say the same thing!

ambryatim 04.02.2009 03:02 PM

Score one for Medusa, but I have heard some were having issues with dirt getting into the open end of the motor and causing premature bearing failure. And some tape up the holes but, I would think that, that would cause cooling issues.

BrianG 04.02.2009 03:19 PM

Covering the holes does limit cooling, but you gotta remember these motors were designed for aircraft where you have a huge fan (propeller) blowing air into/across the motor. In cars, you just have whatever flow makes its way under the body, so the vents play less of a role.

I use aluminum tape on the wire end and cut a thin aluminum disc to sandwich between the motor and mount in front. I use aluminum because it help transfer the heat to the mount. In the three Medusa setups I have (one of which is a 36-80 on 5s in a XT8 truggy), everything is fine temp-wise. Eventually, I plan on getting the heatsink clamps Mike is working on just for added insurance, but it probably isn't required.

ambryatim 04.02.2009 03:24 PM

What about using an outerwears motor cover???? They claim that it lets air in and keeps moisture and dirt out.....If it would work I might go for a Medusa.
