Stuttering at low power

Hi folks, I just got a brand new 3650-3300 v2 through the door today.

Now I'm fairly green when it comes to larger scale brushless stuff, I've been mostly doing 18th scale electric for the last few years, so go easy on me, but I noticed that when I plugged it in to my MM and gave her a little spin (I lightly held the rotor to load it), it cogged/stuttered until about 25% power. Even with no load at all, it wouldn't start rotating until about 25%. Battery is a Maxamps 5000 3S.

Is this normal? Do I just need to raise the start power on the MM? My castle 5700 starts straight away from extremely low power.

And is it ok/recommended to cover up the holes? They are pretty darn large and I would hate to get a stone in there :oh:

First, make sure your MM has the newest firmware (v1.20 currently). The start algorithm is much better with slotted stator motors with the new firmware.

Even then, it will do that "chattering" a bit. It's not true cogging (where large amounts of current flows), so nothing should be harmed. It's just that you are going too slow. Increasing the start power can help with this.

Decrease the "dead band" in the MM ESC setting (via Castle Link) so that the ESC kicks on a little sooner. That will get rid of that rather large movement before the motor starts. Might be a good idea to reset trims/EPAs to 0 on your radio and then recalibrate the radio to the ESC so it knows the true max, min, and neutral throttle points.

Thanks for the advice Brian, I'll try that when I get home next week.

my same motor was doing the same thing on my 3s and MM and I went to a new 2.4 radio, and no other changes and the whole thing went away..99%. go figure

It could have been from interference...I run on FM and my friend runs 2.4 and he has no issues at all...My range is 1/3 less than his

Just wanted to say, finally finished my project and got her out and about. Absolutely no problems, the motor is NOT stuttering at all, she runs perfectly even at very low power with not even a hint of cogging. Very cool temperatures too! 104f max today, I should probably gear up a bit.

Thanks guys.
