Is 14mm enough?
Just got some Savage tires. They are Bandlands mounted on Traxxas 5 star wheels. Problem is, I have to buy new hex's and wheel nuts for them. Question is: is 14mm enough? I plan to run a 5s-6s Savage with a plane esc. For now a 8xl copy motor, maybe a Medusa down the line. Will these do the job? I heard of using the "grub screw mod" but I don't see anyway to drill through them...
Looking for what your take is on 14mm. I read a thread a couple of days ago of a guy that couldn't run his car without stripping his. Then again, he was running NiMh, on a fairly heavy/powerful setup I would assume... |
as long as you keep them tight they should be fine... and they are traxxas tmaxx rims.
|
Probably not- I was greasing mine (9XL, 4S, MM, 14.5 pounds) until I went to the Maximizer aluminum beadlock rims, which are heavy, and pricey.
17mm would be your best bet if you dont want to shell out about $180 for all four. |
14mm suck imo. You may be able to keep them running for a while, might as well as they already are mounted, but I'd get 17mm preferentially. As said, make sure they stay tight.
|
I already got 14mm. stockers are 17. Hmm.... No bueno. conversion is starting to take a toll for the worse as it is now.
|
Confused a bit here... you have 17mm hexes, but you bought 14mm rim yes? So you need 14mm hexes? I have a set for savage you can have if you need them.
|
I used to run 17mm hex's on 17mm stock savage x tires. Then i got the new tires, and the seller (takedown) included some 14mm hex's with them. Problem is that they are not large enough (in diamiter) to fit on the sav axels. I cannot drill things out to save my life. Other then that and the fact that i need wheel nuts, and I don't know if they will last, I should be good.
Finnster, i would be interested. as long as you're sure that they are large enough to fit. Got any wheel nuts by chance? |
They are the ones that came w/ my savvy when new. They had a 14mm set and a 17mm set. I only use the 17mm.
|
Use the hpi 14mm hexes that belong on the savage...

I found the stock .21 ones. they are $6 and come with pins and wheel nuts. that should work well. I noticed that the stock nuts have a lip sort of thing around the nut to help get a better grip on the wheel. it's like a washer built into the nut? The ones i got at the hardware store today did not have that. Either way it looks like i will need nuts, so most likely i will have to buy the entire set. Thanks for the offer finnster, but think i might as well just go for the combo deal. Hmm.... How much would shipping be? Any idea? if so, i can just buy some serrated wheel nuts from tower.
On a side note. I was talking to Takedown (outside of the forum) and he suggested using gorilla glue between the hex hub and the tire. Sounds like a great idea to me, and i know where i can get some! Thoughts maybe? |
Shipping, IDK, a couple stamps or so.
The stock nuts are special. They have support for the center hole, as well as the serrations so they don't come loose. Ebay may be worth looking at too, but they just tend to be a bit pricey. |
That's what i was thinking. the "lip" i was talking about....what I was trying to communicate is just that. The support for the center hole. You think i would be best to get the hubs from you, and the wheel nuts seperate? Or just buy the kit for $6?
kit- http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDLE6&P=7 |
buy the kit and you are good to go. glueing the hexes is a good idea for 14mm. by the way, they are called "flanged nuts". trust me, i know my nuts
