Are the MMM v3's reliable . . or not?
Hi Guys,
I'm about to buy the ESC & motor for my 8ight-T conversion, and I want a general opinion if the MMM v3 ESC's have the problems sorted out, or if I should steer clear of them. I'm in Australia so I can't afford the downtime & postage associated with ESC's burning out. Does the Castle rep on this forum care to make a general comment to put everyone's mind at rest?? I'm somewhat concerned with this post but my minds still not made up as the SideWinder in my Rustler VXL has been flawless: https://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12431 If I roll with a 5s1p, and low KV motor (1600-2000) and don't overgear am I still likey to have a MMM crap out on me. thanks |
MMM v3 is TOPS!
Things to consider. 1. Make sure you run good packs. ie min 25C 4000mah, but 30C 5000 is better. 2. I have an 8ight-E buggy and I've ran 12,13,14&15T pinions. I've noticed very little diff temps wise. seeing that you're running the T, then maybe keep to 13 or 14T 3. If you're runnin 5s then get a motor that's around 1900/2000kv, I'm running the CC/Neu 2200kv combo and I think 5s is a little too much, will be going to 4s soon. I don't think there is a better bang for buck combo out there.. |
thanks little john. All I have to work off is past experience with the Rustler.
7.4v 2s1p Sidewinder Velineon 3500Kv 54/15 & 54/17 gearing (32 pitch). As this was a low KV motor and could gear quite high, and never had an issue with the motor or ESC. I'm hoping to do the same with the 8ight-T. I figured out using Brian-G's speed calc that my Rustler was doing about 40mph, that's all I really want out of the 8ight-T in terms of speed, 45mph would be nice. I was looking at the 4s1p & 5s1p 30c 5000mah Zippy packs. The higher C rating the better, cool batteries = safe batteries. thanks again. |
I would consider the v3 is extremely reliable.
I have a v2 and with an external BEC it is running very strong. The v3's are supposed to have the BEC issue fixed so they should run even better. |

I've not used Zippys, but others have had good and bad luck with them. I have 1 Losi 5s 4000mah 25c pack which I would not recommend anyone buy. and a few 5s & 3s 4500mah 35c Tanic packs which are great. I've just orderd some Elite pack from cheapbatterypacks.com. heard they're ok, but will report back later. Don't forget that wheels and tyres make a difference to gearing as well. bigger wheels will make things hotter. Cheers. |
Hey Primus, good to see you on here.
The MMM V3's are great. Im running one in my XT8 on 2000kv Medusa and have tried 4-6S and have found the 5S the best. As mentioned above make sure you some good batts. |

Fancy meetin you here. The Rustler VXL has had a full rebuild and clean, and is going on Fleabay to make way for my 8ight-T project. Looking forard to researchin and getting the big beast running. What sort of Medussa are you running and how have you found it?? thanks everyone for all your advice. Cheers |
I'm running a MMM in my ~16 pound Muggy with a 80mm MedUsa motor and it's been very reliable. I cooked one from doing a lot of high speed heavy braking and they had me a new one in about 2 weeks. I like it's throttle control 10x better than my MGM and the programming is great. So far it's been very robust for me, every time I get my Muggy running again it goes back to work making sure I've got more broken parts  IMO it's well worth the money, where else are you going to find a 150 USD controller this reliable, smooth, programmable, and backed up by an AWESOME 1 year warranty?

You will have much more fun with a truggy, I am running 100k fluid in the centre diff and can not get enough of the rear wheel and wing wheelies on grass to impress the kids watching. |
yes they are relaible...
but they are an F1 system...so feed them F1 juice!! get good packs and dont gear it silly. shaun |
Off the topic, but how do you find your 5S Zippy Packs Shaun? They are pretty much the extent of what I can afford by the time I piece the rest of the truggy together.
|
Everyone has been extremely pleased with the zippy packs. I have one that was remade for me by lincpimp which is quite a nice pack. I would like so more zippy's they just seem to always be sold out of what I need.
They are the best bang for the buck you can get, and much better than maxamps. |

Maxamps lipos are actually quite good. Target practice, stress relief, whatever you want to call it: http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...y/DSCN1843.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...y/DSCN1844.jpg |
I had a V2 and it had the BEC issue. AFter I got my V3, same setup, its been rock sold for many runs now on my 7XL feigao. I also run an MMM 2200 combo on 5S with no problems and its a much cooler setup. I just picked up a third MMM combo that I plan to run on 6S and we will see how it goes, but I have quite a few runs now on V3's without a problem.

I have a MMM V2 and MMM V3 and both work great. My V2 runs a Neu 1515/.5Y/S 4400 kv motor on 3s and it works flawless. Both have have the latest firmware installed.I am very pleased with Castle products and highly recommend their products.
