What temp does the fan turn on on the MMM?
Hey, I have a V2 MMM with the firmware that is before the one that was just released.
My question is, at what temp does the fan turn on? My fan turns on periodically but after I just let the truck park there for about 10-15 seconds it turns off. I figure if I know what temperature it turns on at, I can use it as an easy way to judge temperature. Thanks BP |
I'm almost certain it turns on at 150F.
|
I believe it comes on at 140 Fahrenheit.
|
in my experiance it comes on at random. i will temp gun the heatsink and it will read 120* but im sure its hotter inside. but the set temp is 150*
|
I'm sure it's reading the temp near/at the FETs. Depending on how well the heatsink is thermally coupled and how dirty/dusty the heatsink is will affect external temperature readings, so everyone will have different settings. Not to mention the effect that the IR temp probe emissivity setting has...

The question is did any software revisions cause the fan to come on at a different temperature? Mine seems to come on sooner than it used to, though it could also be the warmer weather.

just the summer air

150F?
Wow...I guess I have to re-think my gearing. I managed to get it to turn on after 3 full throttle passes... Motor and batteries were fine. |

just because the fan is on doesnt mean its over heating. |
what are the max safe temps for a motor/lipo/esc any way?
|
For motor I'd say 160 (some might say a little higher, but just like anything a safe range is better. You don't run something with a max of 100 and 99.9), the lipo's about 120, and the ESC about 160 as well.
As a personal goal, I try to keep the motor at 125, ESC at 140, and Batteries at 115. This way I have some leeway if it is a hot day or there is tall grass or something... |
i thought it came on at 130 lol.
my fan NEVER comes on during a race and the moter has never seen 140 (and ive never seen it do 130) shaun |

Actually, i get some pretty good motor temps (around 135-140) when i don't have to use the breaks very often. I also run on a 60ft long track where I am never able use more than 1/4 throttle. Even with the Castle Neu 2650 on 4s and 5s, the motor temps still hover around 140. The MMM fan, however, turns on after 3 minutes. Yikes! But oh yeah, I also get 35 minutes of continuous runtime after that on a 3900 mah 5s pack, which goes to show how much power I am also not using by doing this. |
You should gear lower then. Your MMM is likely heating up by current alone. Not sure why the motor is heating up that much with that little throttle...might be the current as well.
|
Then it's too slow. LOL. But actually, motor temps don't seem to be affected much by gearing. On 4s I get the same temps geared for 50 (14 tooth) as for 40 (11/12 tooth), and 50 mph is much more fun. xD.
