Pinion Problems
 

OK i have the Wanderer 10XL and i've been grinding the end post where the pinion goes and its pretty flat and my pinion keeps poping off.

Could my MMv3 braking to hard? (default 50%)

Grub Screw Stripped?

More Grinding?

Etc.?


any help would be helpful. getting really upset about it

I would start with a new SS just in case the old one is stripped.

i doubt its because the area is not too flat. i did not grind a very good job on my 7xl and its holding up just fine. maybe you should try putting thread lock.

I had the same prob w my 9XL, and my pinion setscrew is out at the end of the shaft, so I knew even a flat would not help keep it on (and may have made things worse).

I have seen ppl many times mention doing a divit, but the problem with that is your stone will almost always wear out into the wrong profile before you can get enough material removed. I found out my buddy had some diamond ball burrs and decided to give it a go. WELL let me say I wish had done it a long time ago. These things are normally used to engrave glass, so I thought they would hold up long enough to get a big enough divit for the end of the setscrew to fall into, and they did with no sweat.

You will need a Dremel if you don't already have one, and you WILL still need to Loctite the setscrew, but this method works flawlessly and the diamond bits are very aggressive on the hardened steel, but are still easy to control. The only thing you need to do is find a way to lock the shaft and cover any air or screw holes, and just nibble away slowly, checking the divit size with the setscrew until you're satisfied...... and here is what I am referring to:

^^ way over complicated. Just use a dremel and a cut off wheel, and put a flat spot on. People are so afraid of grinding their shaft. You won't hurt it. You won't get it too hot grinding on it. It doesn't take much at all. Just a lil flat spot. Then loctite your setscrew. It's that easy. It really is.

Alright maybe I over explained a bit, but the divit is the only clean way to retain it in all directions if the ss is at the END of the shaft like mine be<<<<<<< see emphasis here now please....sheesh tough crowd.:mdr:

Well unlike the name 9XL would suggest, my Feigao is not well endowed. It has been a problem at times, pinions slip, women laugh, it's really difficult to talk about, but I figured, it is a Chinese motor and those are not known for... well- so at least I'm not alone!

Late night shaft discussions! I had better go to bed before my virgin eyes read something that my mother warned me about...

What I've done previously is tape over all openings on the motor, then clamp the shaft level in a vice so only the area of the shaft to be removed sit proud of the vice jaws than grind down to the jaws, quick tidy up with emery paper, remove tape...easy peasy - good to go!!

locktite did the trick but now need a longer screw with a lock washer well i should get it done before the next race

I've tryed the hole locktite thing and it works and some times not, enough bashing and I generally get the pinnion to slide forward even tho the ss is still tight to the shaft, thinging of use a rubber tube to slide on either sie of the gear to prevent it from sliding forward or backwards will not causing the shaft to bind and put too much undue stress on the motor.
