Budget BL System

eZRun 80A ESC
KD-36-74 1900kv (75A)
Turnigy 5000mah 5S 25C

In BrianG's review he said that it would arm and run on 5S. Do you think I could run this combo if I was conservative with the gearing?

(I know the components are cheap and I can get better stuff but I want to know if this will work)

The motor and controller would probably run pretty hot, but the whole system might work. The esc may run 5s, but there's a reason it's rated for 4s.

You should find yourself a used mmm or something along those lines... You'd be much happier.

You could check out my budget e-revo build. I put together a 4s BL e-revo for under 400 bucks. It's got pretty good conponets too.

if you have the option of mechanical brakes, you can get an esc that can handle up to 7s lipo and is actually very sturdy. it is the one i have for my savage with a KB45-8xl on 6s lipo. it does not need a pistix and the best part is, it only costs $28.

it is a 100a esc, but in reality, it handles 85-95a constant. my motor is supposed to be able to draw up to 150a and the hottest the esc has gotten after a 25min hard run is 145F.

If you can go with mechanical brakes, there are loads of good 6s escs on hobbycity.

I was just going to try and pick up a 1/8 Truggy roller so I guess I could use mech brakes if it will allow me to spend less money. Wouldn't I need a 3ch radio though?

scarletboa 06.07.2009 12:55 PM

nope, just a y-connector for the 2nd channel.

Frozen72 06.07.2009 01:31 PM

Ok. I guess I'll go with that ESC.

Should I run a BEC or a RX pack?

Metallover 06.07.2009 03:58 PM

yeah, there's a $5 bec on hobbycity you can get.

Frozen72 06.07.2009 08:56 PM

Motor - KD45-10L 1800kv - $42.42
ESC - HobbyKing SS 8S 95A - $29.99
BEC - Turnigy 5A 6V BEC - $7.44
Battery - Turnigy 5000mah 15C 5S (Actually 20C it's a label mistake) - $49.99

Don't forget to add in a decent servo for brakes if your gonna run mechanical breaks.

Frozen72 06.07.2009 09:12 PM

Oh yea I forgot about those.

I'll get these - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=390049248358

I've had good luck with the HXT 12kg servo. It has enough torque to turn my e-revo wheels on cement and it has metal gears, a lot of torque,,, It only costs $8. Just make sure to use washers and be careful with the mounts, because I've broke a couple. If you have a solid mounting point like most vehicles do and you use washers you'll be fine.

there is a reason why the kd 36 is known as turning toasters of death... the kb 45 is not high end yet, but at least has a balanced rotor. and In my opinion they get hot, but not that hot like the kd. make sure that you can install some fans for cooling purposes, the normal heatsinks don't fit. maybe a losi heatsink fits, dunno. some boat guys drilled holes into the front and endbell, so the heat gets out easier, I did that as well, and made it dustproof with a nylon-sock. however, make sure you have a proper cooling for that motor, otherwise - when it turnes too hot inside - the rotor is demagnetized. and that can happen pretty quick...

the shaft is 6mm, most of the pinions are 5mm, so you have to get the shaft done for 5mm. or you buy a bunch of pinions and get them drilled for 6mm. you won't be able to do that with your drilling machine.

that setup is very similar to mine and i am running it in a savage x conversion. my motor doesn't really have any temp issues either. it usually stays around 145-150F for general bashing. the esc rarely sees over 140F.

what makes me mad though is that most of hobbycity's escs only go to 5s and i run 6s. i have to run my rx pack for now.
