4WD Short Course
 

I've had Thunder Tiger Tomahawk ST for a while but got bored of nitro so I've decided to convert it into a 4WD electric short course truck.
Basically my plan is to make a new chassis that is 40MM longer, strap a pair of 3s LiPos to the back and stick an electric motor in it. The one thing I haven't quite sussed out yet it what to do about a motor mount. I had considered running the optional centre diff and having a diff/motor mount custom made but my other and possibly better is to go with a 1/8 diff and an RC-Monster motor mount.

Your idea looks sound...except for the castle motor. Not the best quality. If you can, sell the motor you have and get a Medusa 50 series 3300kv if you plan to run 3s...which from your pic. seems to be your the route you are going to go . Also, if you get a Medusa, go w/a 5mm shaft...which makes for a stronger set up.

For a motor mount you might want to consider something like this

that attaches to the center diff mount with the brake disc screws. With thick enough material you won't need a brace on the chassis like my example. But if you make your own chassis adapting a 1/8 diff and motor mount would be easier than with the stock chassis.

For a body, the kyosho DRT body is the closest in size, but the wheelbase is still 23mm longer on that truck, which with some careful trimming should still look good. And the width is alot closer DRT=257mm, Tomahawk=245 than the alternatives. Since you plan to go 40mm longer I assume you're thinking slash body which has a track width of 296mm. Not trying to talk you out of the extended chassis, just providing some info. Looks like a cool project, keep us updated.

Overdriven, I had considered the Kyosho body but I'd rater lengthen the chassis and have a better spread of shells as well as more room for the LiPos. The Tomahwak comes with 12mm wideners on each side but with a set of TC hexes I should be able to get the wheels inside the shell no problem.

The battery are Kokam 3 cell 2000mah pack left over from my heli days. The motor is just in there to make sure it would all fit in there.

Those were some things I found doing some quick research, you never know if there's an idea you haven't thought of until you listen to them all. Good to see you've done some research already and have a solid plan. I agree with your plan too, if you're going to build a chassis might as well go bigger, especially if you already have a solution for the width difference. I've always wanted to do one of those 1-10th 4wd buggies myself, but seem to be caught up in the larger scales at the moment. Keep us posted.

where did you get those batterys at?

Not yet unfortunately I've been tinkering with my rock crawler for the nationals weekend. I've also been saving some cash so I can get the motor mount machined and buy all the other bits I'll need.

The batteries came from Overlander in the UK although I don't think they stock them anymore.


What do you guys think about running a Mamba Monster in this thing?? :bad: Also can anyone tell me the hole spacing on the Castle/Neu motor. I should have some more updates on this in a couple weeks once I get my parts.

hi Tupers/all...the thread spacing for mounting the mm motor is 25.00mm. nice motor i have one in my e-maxx, crazy on 6s. yer go for it :yes:

Ah cool so it's the same spacing as your average 540 motor then.

yes but it has a 5mm output shaft, if you buy the combo you get a pinion in the box :party:
